Week-long medical
camp at college
Ludhiana, August 26 According to the Civil Surgeon, Dr S.N. Tiwari, a team of doctors comprising Dr J.M. Singh, Dr I.S. Bagga, eye specialists, Dr Gurdeep Ghuman, dental surgeon, and Dr Sangeeta Singh, skin specialist, examined students and staff members today. The students were also examined for ideal height and weight, deficiency diseases and other disorders like hypertension and given suitable instruction as regards prevention and treatment. They were also given medicines on the occasion. Ms Santosh Bhatia, District Mass Education and Information Officer, advised students about preventive measures against diseases. The Principal of the college, Dr Madanjeet Kaur Sahota, stressed the need for regular medical check-up of every student in order to make them physically and mentally fit. Meanwhile, the Civil Surgeon, Dr S.N. Tiwari, cautioned the city residents against common ailments like gastroenteritis, malaria, dengue, viral fever. Since many of these diseases were water-borne, the people should make sure that drinking water was safe. The water should ideally be boiled and chlorinated with .5 mg chlorine tablet for every half litre of water, he said. He said the residents should keep their surroundings clean, potholes should be cleared of stagnant water or else it should be sprayed with diesel or kerosene oil to check the breeding of mosquitoes. Dr Tiwari said those suffering from fever should get their blood tested for specific follow up. |

10-kg tumour removed from chest
Ludhiana, August 25 According to Dr Jagdip Whig, Vice-Principal and Head of the Department of Chest Unit, the patient had complained that she had been having chest pain and cough problem for the past two years. She was diagnosed to be having a massive tumor in her chest, which was compressing her lungs. Dr Atul Mishra, Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, conducted a three-hour-long surgical procedure on her and extracted the tumor. It weighed around 10 kg. Dr Mishra was assisted by Dr Sunil Katyal, anaesthetist, and Dr Pawan. The patient was discharged four days after the operation. Dr Whig said such a massive liposarcoma of the chest, which occupied whole of the left side and about half of the right chest, was very rare. He described it as a highly malignant growth, usually derived from soft tissues. According to Dr Mishra, the usual symptoms were chest pain, breathlessness etc. Such symptoms should not be neglected and the patient should immediately seek expert medical advice, he said. |

BVM, Alpine paddlers clash in TT final
Ludhiana, August 26 BVM School faced little challenge from Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Civil Lines, 3-1 while Alpine International School demolished Green Land Model Senior Secondary School, G T Road 3-0 to enter the final. In the first semi-final, Sandeep Singh of BVM School prevailed over Vasu Jain of KVM School 11-6, 11-7 and 11-3 to put his team ahead. In the second match, Jagdeep made mincemeat of Rohtas Sachdeva 11-3, 11-3 and 11-4 to consolidate the lead. However, in the third match, Paras Sood of KVM School rallied to outclass Rishi Batra 6-11, 11-2, 11-9, 9-11 and 11-9 to bounce back into the game. In the fourth match, Jagdeep quelled a strong challenge put up by Vasu Jain before romping home victorious 11-7, 11-6 and 11-9 and helped BVM School win the match 3-1. In the second semi-final, Alpine International School paddlers proved their supremacy as they ran over Green Land School 3-0. Karanvir beat Ankush 11-3, 11-9 and 11-9 while Ramit edged out Tarun 5-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9 and 11-6. Mayank blanked Shivaj 1-0, 1-0 and 11-0 and enabled BVM School to wrap up the match 3-0. |

Ludhiana, August 26 Four teams — Government Senior Secondary School, Haibowal Kalan, Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Civil Lines, Nav Bharti Public School and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University, have been invited to take part in this tournament to be played on league basis. Matches would comprise 20 overs each, Mr Varinder added. |
