I-Day killings: ULFA mastermind held
5 killed in stepped up violence

Jorhat, August 26
The Assam Police today arrested a top ULFA militant, who is the suspected mastermind of the Dhemaji bomb blast which killed 13 persons including 10 school children on Independence Day.

Self-styled Lieutenant of ULFA’s armed wing Dalami Dutta, alias Anju Dutta was apprehended today from the Puthi Nadhi village under Mariani police station, Jorhat Superintendent of Police Surendra Kumar told reporters.

The ULFA ultra is reported to have confessed that she used to converse over wireless with the outfit’s commander in chief Paresh Barua who, she claimed, was now in Myanmar.

The army apprehended captain Kewang Tesia of the NSCN (IM) early this week from Joypur Tinali in Dibrugarh district and recovered from him Rs 2 lakh in cash.

In stepped up violence, six persons, including two BSF men, were killed and 51 others injured in three blasts triggered by the ULFA in three districts of Assam since last night.

A BSF bus was blown up in an IED blast this morning killing its driver, an assistant sub inspector and a daughter of a personnel in Gopalpara district, official sources said.

Initial police reports had put the toll in the blast at nine, which was later revised to three dead.

In another blast, two persons were killed and 37 others injured when a time bomb went off in a bus as it halted at the Gossaigaon weekly market in Kokrajhar district.

The vehicle was badly damaged in the explosion, the sources said. The bus was en route to Cooch Behar in North Bengal. When it stopped at Gossaigaon, the helper spotted an unclaimed object and raised an alarm.

But before the police could act the bomb went off killing one person on the spot and another succumbed to his injuries in hospital. ULFA militants lobbed a hand grenade in front of a cinema hall killing one person and injuring eight others late last night in Dibrugarh district. — PTI
