Theatre is medium for their message
Campus Notes |
Theatre is medium for their message Patiala: The seats of higher learning serve the society not only through academics but also by reaching out to the society in an attempt to address the issues of the times. The Repertory Theatre, Punjabi University, Patiala, is a unit that is actively involved in such an endeavour. While the Department of Theatre and TV teaches students the fundamentals of drama to hone their skills, the Repertory Theatre produces plays, engaging professionals. The Repertory was earlier a part of the Department of Theatre and TV but this year it was set up as an independent wing. This is another step by the university to help in the promotion of Punjabi language and culture. The actors may be paid by the university but the underlying motive is educational, to take good theatre to the masses and also help address issues which the society is grappling with. Academics step out to reach out to people with a message that can only be beneficial to the society. Two issues which are the scourge of the Punjabi society currently are widely prevalent drug abuse and female foeticide. The increasing tendency of drug addiction among Punjabi youth is eating into the social fabric of the state. New ways and means need to be evolved to put a break on to this fast-growing menace. What can be a better medium than theatre to hammer the message home against the two evils? The Repertory produced the play “Mitti Rudn Kare” based on a story by Baldev Singh Moga and adapted by Rana Ranvir. Noted theatre personality, Dr Gurcharan Singh, Director of the Repertory has directed it. The repertory took this play to the people to spread the message against drugs and female foeticide. The story revolves around the troubles and ordeals faced by a middle class rural Punjabi family whose head, Baru falls prey to drug addiction. While he is busy enjoying the psychedelic effects of drugs, his family, especially his wife, Jassi suffers immensely. Baru at one stage is assumed to be dead, while he actually falls unconscious failing to stand the unavailability of drugs. As he gets this, he gets up smilingly. While everyone else heaves a sigh of relief his wife, breaks her bangles saying: “I feel widow in the real sense now?” Theatre serves as an excellent medium spread the message to people in the rural areas where 75 per cent of the population has been known to practice substance abuse. Punjab also leads the country in the most skewed sex ratio. The state has the least number of females per thousand males. Shows have been staged at various places in Punjab hinterland to reach out to all. It was mostly performed in the districts most hit by drug abuse —Bathinda, Abohar, Fazilka and Jalandhar. Punjab Police chipped in with excellent back-up, sponsoring work in villages of Bathinda. According to Dr Gurcharan Singh, the IGP, Bathinda Range, Mr Rajinder Singh, took a personal interest in the play. The message from theatre is direct. “It works so much better than political speeches and TV. The theatre has a direct approach. The audience is able to relate to the actors and the message has a strong impact. Many persons have come to us to say that they were not aware how much havoc the dreaded scourges can wreak.” It idea of the Repertory is two-fold “to address social issues and to take good theatre to the public.” It is the education-entertainment combine that makes theatre an excellent medium to send a message across. Academics also go beyond the theoretical confines and step out to the world where their need is paramount. |

incorporate the views and feedback received from farmers in their
diagnostic survey of research system. The acting HAU Vice-Chancellor,
Ms Asha Sharma, said this would be implemented through operational
research projects, especially in integrated watershed management,
agro-forestry models, farming systems, cropping patterns and livestock
