Body found in canal: The body of Gurjinder Singh (25) was found floating in the canal near Chananakhera village, 11 km from here, on Saturday night. Family sources said Gurjinder, married just four months back, had parked his truck loaded with sand near Alamwala village to wash hands but he slipped into the canal on December 29. His assistant could not rescue him on Saturday night. Some youths noticed the body in the canal and informed the police. The parents of the victim arrived from Bariwala and identified him.

One arrested: The police on Monday arrested a person on charges of stealing vehicles from the Lambra police station area. The accused, Daljit Mall alias Jeeta, was held at a naka by a police team led by SHO Pritam Singh. The accused is resident of Lalian Khurd. Two stolen vehicles were also recovered from his possession, the police said.

Water supply: The Local Bodies Minister, Choudhary Jagjit Singh, has said the Punjab government would provide the entire rural population in the state with water supply facility. In a statement issued here on Monday, he claimed that the government had provided Rs 100.50 crore in 2002-2003 against which an expenditure of Rs 92.53 crore had been incurred. During the next fiscal year, it had provided Rs 100.04 crore and spent Rs 70.40 crore.

Annual function held: Helpline celebrated its 8th annual function here on Sunday. Mr Ashok Sharma, MLA, was the chief guest. Woollen uniforms, shoes and scholarships were provided among 1500 students at the function.

Meena Day celebrated: “Meena Day”, dedicated to the Lohri of 101 girls, was celebrated on Saturday here. A function was organised by the Kalpana Chawla Social Progressive Society with the help of Social Security, Women and Child Development Department besides the Health and Education Department. The function was attended by a large number of school- children and the people of the town. Mr Jagdip Singh Momi, Tehsildar, Mr Jatinder Kumar Sood, president of the local Municipal Council and others while addressing the gathering stressed the need to check decreasing sex ratio.
Crushed to death: A motorcyclist, Surjit Singh (30) of Rataul village, was crushed to death by a bus of Raj Company at Doburjit village on Sunday. The local police has registered a case under Sections 304A, 279, 427, IPC, against the driver of the bus.
Arrest decried: The local unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has condemned the arrest of Dr Surinder Singh Kainth, Senior Medical Officer of the local Central Khalsa Hospital, in a land grabbing case of Bhullar village, 8 km from here.
Threat to life: Ms Sukhwant Kaur, member panchayat of Baggarian village, 8 km from here, fears a threat to her life after an assault on her by the village sarpanch, Sukhchain Singh and his father Hazara Singh.
