Nurses on probation take pledge

Chandigarh, January 10
The nine probationer nurses of the Nursing Command Hospital, Western Command, took the ‘Nightingale pledge’ at Sushruta Auditorium, today.
The Principal Matron of the school, Col H.J. Bhullar, administered the pledge at a grand but simple ceremony.

The Deputy Director, Medical Service, Headquarters Western Command, Maj Gen S.K. Kaul, was the chief guest. General Kaul said the students of nursing must maintain high standards of the profession.

Physical fitness camp for hockey players

Chandigarh, January 10
A physical conditioning camp for hockey players started today at the Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, here today.
The camp is being organised by the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) on rest days i.e. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, of the ongoing Premier League.

As many as 54 players from Tier 1 and Tier II teams have been selected for the camp to make them physically fit as well as prepare them for forthcoming tournaments like Indo-Pak series, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and the World Cup.

The camp is being conducted under the supervision of coaches Harmeek Singh, V Bhaskaran, N S Sodhi, Harinder Singh and C Lobo and Sampath Kumar, Physical Trainer besides Physio Ravi from Australia.

Stress is being laid on building strength, weight training, skills, discipline and punctuality.

“All top players of the country have been included in the camp, which will benefit them if they follow the instructions properly,” said Mr N S Sodhi.

St John’s emerge winners in quiz

Chandigarh, January 10
St John’s High School emerged winners at the city-level finals of the All-India Inter-School Euro-Enviro Quiz 2006.
Nine schools participated in the quiz. Teams from St Kabir, St Xavier’s and St John’s made it to the city finals. The winning team will now go to Mumbai and battle it out for the national quarter-finals.

The winners will compete for the zonal finals. The national final will be held on January 28.

The quiz is an initiative of the Eureka Forbes Institute of Environment (EFIE). The finals will decide the winner for the All-India Inter-School Trophy.

Leading schools from 14 Indian cities — Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, Ahmedabad, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Cochin, Jaipur and Hyderabad — are participating in the quiz.

A host of attractive prizes and gifts are in store for winners, including certificates, trophies and scholarships (cash bond).

Inter-school games from Jan 22

Chandigarh, January 10
The Sports Department, Chandigarh, is organising the Inter-School Tournament for Boys and Girls (under-19 years) in 13 disciplines — athletics, badminton, basketball, football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, kabbaddi, kho-kho, tennis, volleyball and wrestling (Boys only) at various department coaching centres from January 22 to 24.

The tournament is being held under the scheme “Promotion of Sports and Games in Schools” by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

The school teams participating will get the benefit of gradation as well as scholarship from the Chandigarh Administration.

The matches will be played between 9 am to 1 pm and 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm daily. All events will be looked after by qualified refree/umpires.

The prize distribution function will take place at the Skating Rink, Sector 10.

The last date for receipt of entry is January 20 with Mr K.S. Bharti, Youth Affairs and Sports, upto 2 pm.

Mixed day for Bhavan Vidyalaya

Panchkula, January 10
Bhavan Vidyalaya A, Panchkula, thrashed Doon Public School, Panchkula, by 10 wickets during the Satluj Annual Founder’s Day under-12 Cricket Meet held at the school in Sector 4, here, today.

Brief scores: Doon Public School: 85 all out (Akshay 30, Arjun 15, Varun 3/10, Rahul 3/12).

Bhavan Vidyalaya A: 86 without loss in 8.1 overs (Naman 35 n.o., Chetan 25 n.o.)

In another match, YPS Mohali beat Bhavan Vidyalaya B, Panchkula, by 45 runs. Batting first, YPS’s Pranav made 35 runs and Amanjeet contributed 28 runs to his team’s total of 152 for 5 in 20 overs. Bhavan Vidyalaya were bundled out for 107 runs in 20 overs.

Brief scores: YPS Mohali: 152/5 in 20 overs (Pranav 35, Amanjeet 28, Hemant 2/15).

City lad bags silver at tennis meet

Chandigarh, January 10
Mandeep Singh Gill of St John’s School, Sector 26, bagged a silver medal and also, while in partnership with Gurmohit Singh of St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, secured a bronze medal in the under-17 boys section in the National School Games (lawn tennis) held recently in Ahmedabad.
Both have been trained by Mr Sandeep Singh, a lawn tennis coach at lake club.

Netball selection trials

Trials to select team for Senior National Netball Championship in boys and girls categories will be held at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 28, tomorrow at 3 pm.
The championship is scheduled to be held at Vijayawada from January 28 to February 1.

Tourism Dept launches website

Chandigarh, January 10
The Chandigarh Administration today launched the official website of the Tourism Department which can be visited at http://Chandigarh.gov.in/ tourism.
Mr Krishna Mohan, Home-cum-Tourism Secretary, launched the site at the UT Secretariat and was accompanied by Mr Vivek Atray, Director, Tourism, and Mr R.C.Sharma, Director, Public Relations.

Interacting with mediapersons after the inauguration, the Tourism Secretary elaborated on various initiatives of the Administration to give a fillip to the tourism in the region.

He said the aim of launching the website was to make people aware about the beauty of the city and the finesse of its architecture.

The administration was working on more information about the immense medical facilities available in the city to attract medical tourism. The website of the Tourism Department launched today would provide information about North India tourism packages and also medical and rural tourism, he added.

Mr Ajay Rampal, the State Informatics Officer highlighted various features of the website. The new website provided pictures and details of places of tourist interest in Chandigarh and its vicinity.

Hoardings removed

Chandigarh, January 10
The municipal corporation today launched a drive to remove the illegal advertisement hoardings in Sector 34. Glow signs and hoardings of showrooms on the first floor were removed.

According to officials, the hoardings were bigger than the ground floor hoardings. A few of the hoardings had been removed earlier also but these had been put back. Officials said notices had been served on shopowners to remove the hoardings but they had not done so.

A similar drive would be taken up in other sectors also.
