PU to consider reservation for Parsi students
Chandigarh, January 16 According to a letter issued by the University Grants Commission to the PU Registrar, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development had asked the UGC for comments regarding allotment of one or two seats in colleges for deserving Parsi students. An official of the ministry had in his letter to the UGC said: “Such an action would indicate government’s practical concern for students of the Parsi community who have been increasingly going abroad for higher education. Since they do not get seats in India, they settle there, further reducing the potential of growth to the Parsi population.” Forwarding this letter to the PU Registrar, the UGC has asked him to send his comments on the matter. PU would also be discontinuing the MSc (mathematics) pass course from the coming session. The course would, however, give way to an MSc (honours) course in mathematics. From the 2006-2007 session, 35 students (30+5 NRIs) would be admitted to MSc (honours school) first year course. The qualification for it would be BA/BSc (general) with mathematics from the colleges affiliated to Panjab University or from other universities on the basis of the marks obtained in the entrance test to be conducted by the university. The merit would be calculated by giving 50:50 weightage to the qualifying degree course. The proposal would also come up for consideration during the Syndicate meeting. Other important agenda items would included the proposal to change rules regarding the rotation of headship of various teaching departments in the university. The existing rule states that a person designated as chairman or head of a department will hold office as such for a period of three years. For the second time, all professors/readers/lecturers in the department have been designated as chairman/head. The proposed rule adds that in case no professor/reader/lecturer is available or eligible, the same person can be allowed to continue as the chairman or the head of the department for a period of another three years or till the next person in the department becomes eligible, whichever is earlier. According to PU rules, a lecturer in a department with at least eight years teaching experience is eligible for the designation as chairperson of the department. In cases where the number of faculty members is limited and the next member is not having eight years of teaching experience, a peculiar situation arises as to who will be designated as the next chairperson of the department. The rules are being changed to cope with this situation. PU has also proposed to increase the number of free local calls which officers can make from their residential lines. |
