PDP-NC war over self-rule hots up
Jammu, February 4 Mr Abdullah, who was talking to mediapersons here, accused the PDP of changing its stand on vital issues pertaining to the state from time to time. He also accused the Centre of trying to complicate the Kashmir issue. He said the PDP was keeping mum on the issue of self-rule till the time the party was in power in the state. Its leaders started pushing ahead the self-rule proposal of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf after the Congress assumed power in the state. He said the Mufti should come out with a statement if he played any role to prevent erosion of the special status of the state during Sadiq’s regime. The NC chief said the advertisement of the PDP on the issue of self-rule was an effort to hide the division within the party on the matter. The party was divided in three camps on the issue. The Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Muzaffar Baig, who had a couple of days ago said that there was no need or self-rule in Jammu and Kashmir as it was being ruled by its elected representatives, was made to backtrack on the issue and insert a signed advertisement in the local newspapers so that he could not take a U-turn again, he alleged. |

Hizbul commander among 3 killed
Srinagar, February 4 A Defence Ministry spokesman said security forces gunned down a Hizbul Mujahideen
battalion commander in an encounter at Aragam Bandipora in north Kashmir. In the other incident, a joint highway domination party of the Army and the Central Reserve Police Force was patrolling the road at Bijbehera at 9.40 p.m. last night when militants attacked them with automatic weapons. Security forces also retaliated and in the fierce clash, four soldiers, including a JCO, were injured. The injured were admitted to a hospital where the condition of the JCO is stated to be critical. The other injured soldiers were discharged from the hospital after first aid, he said. A report from Jammu said the police and Rashtriya Rifles (RR) troops were conducting searches at Bhatta when militants fired at them. In retaliatory fire, the troops shot dead one LeT militant while the others managed to escape, he added. The slain militant was identified as Abu Hamza of Pakistan. One AK rifle, two magazines and 10 rounds were recovered from him. A Pakistani national, suspected to be a guide of militants, was shot dead by troops after he sneaked into Samba sub-sector from near Kamor forward post last night. A BSF spokesman said when a patrol asked him to stop, he fled towards the border and was shot dead. Arms found near Ranjit Sagar Dam
Jammu, February 4 On receiving reports of sparking on the banks of the Satwain reservoir close to the dam, the police rushed to the site and undertook digging around noon, Senior Superintendent of Police Kathua, Jhony William, said. The police recovered two rocket launchers, one anti-tank missile, eight grenades, two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and some rounds of assorted ammunition from the site, he said. William said the ammunition of AK-rifles had probably caused the sparking when the water level rose in the reservoir. Probably, the militants had dumped the arms and explosives in the area with a view to target the dam at some later stage, the police officer said. — PTI |
