Computer education to be introduced
in more govt schools

Ludhiana, February 4
Mr Harnam Dass Johar, Education Minister, Punjab, has said that under the programme of “Computer education in government schools”, computer education will start in 5,278 government schools in the state from July 1, 2006, and 7000 teachers were being appointed for this purpose.

Mr Johar was addressing a function, organised to celebrate the golden jubilee of government Model Senior Secondary School, Cemetery Road, here today.

The minister further said that the computer education had already started in 1306 schools, and from April 1, 2006, 1,572 more schools would start computer education and from July1, 4,406 schools would be covered under this programme. Under the Sarb Sikhya Abhyan, all schools would be provided adequate rooms and toilet blocks.

He said grants of Rs 9 crore had been released to government schools of Ludhiana district alone under the Sarb Sikhya Abhyan for improving various facilities. Rs 2.88 crore had been spent for additional rooms for upper primary classes and Rs 3.15 crore on the construction of toilet blocks in 900 schools.

He announced a grant of Rs 12 lakh for the overall development of the school, including Rs 5 lakh for the construction of a big hall, 2 lakh for nursery classroom, Rs 1.75 lakh for computer room and Rs 3 lakh for the promotion of sports. Mr Johar presented a cheque for Rs 3 lakh for the construction of a classroom and two toilets in the school. He also honoured about 25 students for their achievements.

Mr Anurag Aggarwal, Director General Education, said the government had accorded top priority to computer education in schools, and recruitment for the appointment of computer teachers had already started.

Ms Maninder Kaur Sandhu, principal of the school, after welcoming the guests,read out the annual report of the school.

Farewell functions in schools

Ludhiana, February 4
It was a day full of nostalgia on one side and soaring aspirations on the other. A day of sharing happy memories and feeling the pangs of loss when class XI of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, bid goodbye to class XII here yesterday. The students of Class XI enthralled the audience with a bouquet of performances out of their kitty of talents. The cultural bonanza comprising English Play, “Judgement of Paris”, Laughter Challenge- Sacred Heart Style was quite mesmerising, while the songs Nach Balliya, Bailanioo, Punjabian di Balle Balle and others set the stage on fire.

The outgoing students were blessed by Rev. Father Davis, director of the school, who motivated them to meet the challenges in life. The principal of the school, Rev Sister Sobel, gave them an inspiring message wherein she urged the students to direct their life towards the good of humankind.

Head Girl Harsimran Baweja and editor, school magazine, Nisha Thapar of XII, reminisced their stay in the school through “My Memoirs.”

P.B. Venkat Raman bagged the coveted Crown of Mr Sacred Heart and Harsimran Baweja was crowned Miss Sacred Heart.

Tagore Public School

The class XI students of Tagore Public School bid farewell to the outgoing students of class XII here today.The students of the senior-most class had mixed feelings of both joy and sorrow, as they were ushered in hall by the Principal Mr Anita Gakhar and their juniors.

The senior students thanked the juniors and the teaching faculty on the occasion.

KVM function

The farewell function in Kundan Vidya Mandir School for both classes X and XII was held here today. The students were blessed by the teachers and the principal.

A brief cultural programme started with a welcome address by the principal while the juniors presented skits, songs, dances and choreography etc. “The school Captain Karan Khangura and Shivani Markanday representing classes XII &X, respectively, thanked the juniors for the party.

Manik Bajaj was selected Mr KVM and Vedika Thapar was selected Ms KVM. Varun Kapoor and Priyanka Jain of Class XII were adjudged Mr and Ms Elegant.

The following students were honoured for their outstanding contributions: Karan Khangura — captain, Avadhi Garg — vice-captain, Manik Bajaj — most versatile student, Ritika, nightingale of KVM, Sushant Mehan — most disciplined student, Vivek Immanuel and Rohit Sahi — best quizzards, Master Madhur Popli and Ms Radhika of class X were adjudged Master Elegant and Ms Elegant, respectively.

Book exhibition

The Sikh Book Centre, Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, today arranged an exhibition of religious books, including gutkas, calendars, religious cassettes, CDs, symbols of the Sikh religion etc at GGN Khalsa College, Civil Lines, Ludhiana.

Mr Gurpinder Singh, general manager, Jathebandak Adare thanked all staff of GGN Khalsa College for their interest among their students and said the motive of organising this exhibition was to create awareness about culture and religion among students. By reading such religious books, the students could gain knowledge about their religion and ideology. He said the response was excellent and all books were sold out.

On request of college students exhibition will continue till Monday, February 6, 2006.

Wetland Day

Under the ageis of the State Council of Science and Technology and able guidance of Mr Varinder Sharma, District Science Supervisor, Wetland Day was organised in Government Senior Secondary Model School, PAU, Ludhiana here yesterday.

Ms Kusum Lata, co-ordinator of the function, narrated the significance of ‘wetlands’ and its biotic componants. In a simple, but impressive way, she explained threats to wetlands. A speech competition under the theme ‘In the wake of poverty, wetlands are life line’ was held. A chart-making competition was also organised. Ms Vidushi, Master Sandeep and Kulmeet got the first, second and third positions respectively in speech competition. While in chart-making competition Satinder Kaur, Amritpal Singh and Jayant Palaha bagged the first second and third positions respectivley. All other participants got consolation prizes.

The judges of the function were Ms Seema Aggarwal, Ms Parmjit Paneser, Ms Meenu Gupta and Ms Satwant Kaur. They stressed upon the students to keep up the promise to save environment in future.

Medical check-up camp

A medical check-up camp was organised in Gurkirpa Play Way School here today. Doctors had come from Bhai Daya Singh Ji Hospital and checked 60 students. Free medicines and tooth pastes were given to students. Dr Archana Prasad of Prasad Speech & Hearing Clinic checked the students for speech and hearing while dental checkup was done by Dr Shipra Vashist and general check up was conducted by Dr Parveen Bassi.

Seminar on financial sector reforms

The Commerce Department of the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan campus Model Town, Ludhiana organised a seminar on the topic “Financial Sector Reforms” on February 4, 2006. Ms Manju Chawla , Principal of the college, welcomed the chair person Dr S.K. Singla, Prof, Head Business and Management Department, Punjab Agricultural University and the resource persons Dr A.K. Vashisht and Dr Karamjit Singh from University Business School, Punjab University, Chandigarh.

Emerging issues and recent developments taking place in financial sectors in India were discussed.

Dr Vashisht divided the banking scenario into four parts: Then pre-independence , pre-nationalization, post- nationalisation and post-liberalisation period.

Dr Karamjit Singh emphasised that this era was not facing the ‘problem of scarcity’ but the ‘problem of plenty’ and explained the various reforms like capital market reforms, Banking and insurance reforms.

DIMT celebrates Basant Panchmi

Students of MBA, M.Sc (IT), PGDCA, BCA and DCA of the Doraha institute of Management and Technology (MIMT) celebrated Basant Panchmi with fervours today said Dr R.S Gupta, Director, DIMT, in a press note. They were dressed up in yellow clothes to celebrate the season. The campus was also decorated for the occasion.

The competition for flower arrangement, table decoration, kite making and kite flying were held. The kite flying competition was inaugurated by Mr Sukhpal Singh, chairman, DIMT by flying a kite. Ms Umal Kaur, Director, Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Doraha, Ms Jaspreet Kaur and Tapvir Singh, director (administration) Doraha Colege of Education, Mr Japvir Singh and Ms Supreet Kaur also graced the occasion. The results of various competitions are as follows:

Agaaz-2006 held

On their first annual function Agaaz-2006, tiny tots of Blossoms Convent School at Leela Megh Singh, 8 km from here, presented a colourful cultural programme today . Mr Sukhwinder Singh Gill, Subdivisional Magistrate, Jagraon, was the chief guest at the function and Mr Maghar Singh, Central Education Officer, Nabha, gave away the prizes to students for securing positions in their academic career.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr Parmod, Principal of the school assured that they would work for the all-round development of children.
