Ageing — a matter of concern
Ludhiana, February 4 With the current armamentarium of topical formulations, filler substances, resurfacing agents and laser, it is more possible than ever to ameliorate certain manifestations of ageing. Dr Alka Dogra, Head, Department of Skin and VD, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said the Ludhiana population, specially women, were worried about wrinkles or ageing. She said preventive aspect of ageing involved use of adequate sunblocks, which provided both UVA and UVB protection. Various therapeutic modalities for defying age lines involved three aspects — topical formulations, pharmacological facelift and resurfacing techniques. In spite of expensive cosmetics, people should try to apply medicated creams as they gave a rosy glow. Some of them were to be applied during the night. Adapalene and Tazarotene gel were the new entrants in the field. Dr Dogra stressed regular use of glycolic acid (10-20 per cent) for improved texture of skin. Vitamin E protected the cell membrane, lipid, from peroxidation. Topical vitamin E was more effective than oral. Vitamin C was said to be 70 per cent effective when applied topically and 20 per cent when given orally for ageing. Fluorouracil was an agent used for in facials. |
