PGI faculty felicitates Dr Talwar

Chandigarh, February 8
The faculty association of the PGIMER today felicitated the Director, PGIMER, Dr KK Talwar, for receiving the Padma Bhushan on Republic Day. Various speakers highlighted the achievements of Dr Talwar and pledged to take the PGI to more glorious heights.

Presenting a memento to Dr Talwar on his achievement, the faculty members said he had become second only to Dr P.N. Chhuttani, who was the first recipient of the honour from the PGI.

Prof Ashok Gupta, president of the Faculty Association, assured the Director of complete cooperation from the medical fraternity by promising better clinical care, patient care and research.

AG Haryana trounce HP in hockey

Chandigarh, February 8
AG Haryana registered a brilliant victory over AG Himachal Pradesh 4-0 in a one sided match on the inaugural day of the Indian Audit and Account North Zone Hockey Tournament played at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, here, today. A total of six AG teams- Delhi Audit, AG Haryana, AG J&K, AG HP, AG UP and AG Punjab are participating in the three-day meet.

AG Haryana made the first successful move in the third minute of the game when Gurmeet Singh, Right-in, sent the ball in the goal post. Maintaining the pressure, AG Haryana scored a second field goal through Anil Sandhir in the four minutes later. The unmarked Gurmeet once again scored another field goal in the 22nd minute of the game. By half-time, the AG Haryana was ahead by 3-0. AG HP, playing a defensive game could not resist another move during the dying moments of the match, when Mahesh of AG Haryana got an opportunity to convert a penalty stroke locking 4-0.

In an otherwise, dull play both the teams had some anxious moments in the game they were given penalty corners (AG Haryana 6 and AG HP 2), but none of them could capitalise on it.

In the second match of the day, AG UP toppled AG J&K, by 8-0. In the second minute of the match Rajendra Dubey scored first goal of the match through a field goal. One minute later, Gagan Srivastava increased the margin by scoring another field goal. Prakhar Kumar stroked twice in the eighth and 12th minute of the match, which further increased their tally.

In the sixteenth minute of the match, Anup Kumar scored a goal by converting a penalty corner. The Captain of the UP team, Anil Yadav, scored twice in the 19th and 21st minutes of the match. At the half-time, the score was 7-0. In the second half, Kumar Ali included his name in the list of scorers when he scored a goal in the 37th minute, guiding his team to victory 8-0. The team of AG J&K seemed helpless against the striking spree of AG UP.

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Pargat Singh (former Indian Hockey Captain), Director Sports, Punjab.

The Chandigarh team had an easy victory in the boys category, beating Andhra Pradesh 12-0 in the under-17 hockey meet (boys & girls) during the 51st National School Games, Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here, today. The Mizoram team met with a disastrous fate, losing the match 0-14 in the girls’ category from host team.

Yesuraj of St Annes School got the first position in 100 m and 800 m races under-16 on the inaugural day of the Chandigarh State Athletics Championship at Sports Complex, Sector 46, here today.

The meet is being organised by the Amateur Athletic Association Chandigarh for sub-junior, junior and senior sportspersons of the city.

Cycle expedition

Chandigarh, February 8
A cycle expedition organised by the Corps of Signals to commemorate their 13th Reunion and 96th anniversary was flagged in by the Chief Signals Officer, Western Command, Maj-Gen A.S. Bakshi, at Chandi Mandir today.

The expedition, comprising two officers, two JCOs and 21 other ranks, was flagged off from Yol cantonment on February 3.

It covered 260 km, touching Ranital, Dehra Gopipur, Murabakpur, Una, Nangal, Kiratpur and Rupnagar.
