Poppy husk peddlers sentenced to 11-yr RI
Jalandhar, February 9 Three other accused were, however, acquitted by the court for the want of evidence against them. According to the allegations levelled by the prosecution against the accused in the court, Sukhdev Singh, Ranjit Singh, Iqbal Singh, Baljit Singh Gola and Charanjit Channa were carrying a consignment of 58 bags of poppy husk when the truck they were travelling in was signalled to stop by a police naka party near Bachhowal village on September 16, 2002. The police party, however, managed to arrest Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Haripur, and Ranjit Singh, a resident of Dadhwal village, from the spot, while the three other accused were said to have escaped. According to the police, all five were travelling in a truck, which did not have any number plate affixed on it, and which was being driven by Sukhdev Singh. When the police party signalled them to stop near Bachhowal village in Phillaur area, three of the five persons came down and ran away, escaping the arrest. The poppy husk consignment was, however, recovered from the spot and each of the 58 bags weighed 38.5 kilogram. Though the court agreed with the version of the prosecution about the involvement of Sukhdev Singh and Ranjit Singh, it was seemingly not convinced about sufficient evidence against the three accused on the grounds that how three unarmed persons could escape in the presence of so many armed policemen in the area. Convicting both the accused to 11 years of RI each, Mr S.K. Aggrawal said the two would have to pay a fine of Rs 1.20 lakh. In case of their failure to pay the fine, each of the convicts would have to spend another three years in the jail. |

5 law students of Lovely Institute suspended
Jalandhar, February 9 Three students of the class are said to have entered the campus “triple-riding” on a two-wheeler yesterday afternoon. When the security guard on duty spotted them and asked one of them to get down, the students refused to do so. A minor altercation reportedly ensued between the students and the guard. Two other students also came in support of the three students and the guard then lodged a complaint against them with the authorities, adding that they had entered the campus in a drunken condition. Later, the boys attended their class. The authorities went to the class to enquire into the matter. Mr Ashok Mittal, President of Lovely Institutes, said that he, too, had felt that the boys were under the influence of liquor. He told them to get their medical examination done, which they refused, he alleged. The other students of the class came in support of these students and reportedly let them escape. The authorities then suspended five students, Harsh Bhatt, Nitin Sharma, Nitin Gupta, Pankaj and Gurwinder, for “indiscipline” yesterday. Mr Pranav Rai, President, Students’ Union, confirmed their suspension and said that the entire class of 57 students had come in their support. Mr Mittal said that when the class took that stand, the entire class had to be suspended today. Today morning, the students went on a strike and no class was held. Ms Rashmi Mittal, Dean, Lovely Institutes, has said the suspension orders against the class could be revoked, but the suspension orders against the five students would not be revoked. The situation could not be resolved till evening, as the students and the authorities remained adamant on their respective stands. |

Protest over man’s ‘death’ in Goraya police station
Phagwara, February 9 The protestors raised slogans against the police and demanded the suspension of the Goraya SHO. The timely intervention of the SSP who ordered the suspension of the SHO, persuaded the protesters to lift the dharna. Sources said Balbir, a resident of Dhaleta village in Goraya, and employee of the Capital Bank, was called to the police station in connection with the investigation into the murder of Ram Asra (65), his landlord. Some eyewitnesses said that Balbir came to the police station around 3.30 pm and began vomiting. He was taken to a private hospital and later shifted to Phillaur Civil Hospital, where he was declared dead about 5 in the evening. While family members accused the police of forcibly giving celphos tablets to Balbir, the police denied the allegation. Police sources said Balbir had come to the police station after consuming some poisonous substance. Eyewitnesses also said that Balbir was fed up of being summoned by the police time and again. The Phillaur DSP, Mr Gursharandeep Singh, when contacted, said Balbir was called to the police station for inquiry into a murder case and no case was registered against the deceased. The sarpanch of Dhaleta village was asked to bring Balbir to the police station at 3 pm. The sarpanch reached the police station, but Balbir did not come along with him, said the DSP. “The sarpanch left the police station after waiting for Balbir. And after some time we were informed that Balbir was standing outside and vomiting. Balbir was called to the police station only twice,” the DSP added. |

‘Badal trying to usurp control of DSGMC’
Jalandhar, February 9 At the same time, Mr Sarna, who was on his way to Amritsar, claimed that “Mr Badal and his party would lose the 2007 Assembly elections and in the same year, a separate Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee would come up in Haryana”. Mr Sarna claimed that he had the support of 31 of the 50 members of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC). He also “paraded” a number of his supporters in front media persons here tonight. “Twentyeight of them will be appearing before the Akal Takht tomorrow along with me,” he claimed. “Mr Badal is trying his level best to usurp the control of the DSGMC. For attaining this objective, he has even joined hands with people like Parhlaad Singh Chandoke,” he alleged. “It is ironical that Mr Badal and his supporters had been seeking the ouster of the same Chandoke from the Sikh Panth a few years back. Badal is also seeking Bitta’s support,” he added. He, however, did not want to say anything much about Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti. “I will speak after my appearance at Amritsar. Our sole motive is to revive the Sikh ‘maryada’ and Sikhism in Punjab and we will strive to take Sikhs away from drugs and other vices,” he added. |
