Tribune News Service

Jammu, February 9
Army and Central security forces were deployed in the Leh town of Ladakh region today when four houses were set on fire following clashes, between members of two communities, which entered the third day.

Sources said curfew was again clamped onto the town where the streets wore a deserted look.

The authorities had imposed the curfew yesterday following incidents of arson and violence but it was later lifted and restrictions on assembly and movement were imposed.

Men of the ITBP, the CRPF and the JKAP were also deployed to quell violence.

Reports said three houses were set on fire at Horze near the Leh town, while one house was set ablaze in the Gompa locality of the main town.

The Muharram procession passed off peacefully with security personnel deployed in full strength enroute though stray incidents of stoning were reported in the morning.

The police resorted to firing and bursted tear-gas shells when irate members of the two communities headed for a clash.Three vehicles were also damaged by the mob.

Incidentally, the authorities have not succeeded in bringing the situation under control for the past three days.

The Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Mr Basharat Khan, and the IGP, Mr K.Rajendra, flew to Leh and convened a meeting of religious and political leaders of the area. They would camp in the town till tomorrow.

Meanwhile, an emergency meeting of leaders of various religious, social and political organisations was today held here under the chairmanship of Dr.K.L.Bhatia, Seh-prant Sangchalak of the RSS.

The meeting took stock of the situation that had arisen following the clashes between two communities in Ladakh.

They expressed deep concern over these incidents which were fraught with dangerous consequences and demanded immediate relief for the victims of violence.
