Prof Adams from UK to
deliver lecture at PGI
Chandigarh, February 21 He will deliver Datta Memorial Oration on “Immunotherapy in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma” at Lecture Theatre — 1 tomorrow. He will also speak on “Aberrant homing of mucosal T cells and extra-intestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease”. Selected: Prof Mandeep Dhillon, Department of Orthopaedics, PGI, has been selected as official team doctor by the Indian Hockey Federation for the on-going Indo-Pak hockey test series. He is accompanying the team to Pakistan for the 2nd half of the test matches to be played in Lahore, Faislabad and Rawalpindi. Lecture: Prof Henry J. Binder, Professor of Cellular and Molecular Physiology, and Professor of Medicine, Yale University, Department of Internal Medicine, USA, delivered a guest lecture on “Pathogenesis and management of inflammatory bowel diseases “ at the PGI. He described the results of new drugs, especially the biological agents, that have considerably helped the management of these difficult to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Prof D.K. Bhasin of the Department of Gastroenterology, PGI, said: “Inflammatory bowel diseases that include ulcerative colitis and crohn’s disease, which are characterised by ulcers in the intestine, and present with rectal bleeding are being reported in increasing numbers in North India also.” Prof B. Nagi, Head, Department of Gastroenterology, said: “Crohn’s disease is a great diagnostic dilemma and closely mimics gastrointestinal tuberculosis and radiology may help in differentiating the two disorders.” Prof Binder was impressed with the working of the PGI and said the Department of Gastroenterology is a world-class department and the clinical and research work done by the department is of very high standard. |

Workshop on clinical pharmacology
Chandigarh, February 21 She spoke about designing of protocols for the conduct of clinical trials. She told the delegates that unless the trial was properly planned and all information about the trial was documented in the protocol, the chance of successfully conducting a trial was negligible. Dr S.P.Dhaneria, Professor of Pharmacology from R.D.Gardi Medical College, Ujjain, spoke on rational use of drugs. According to Professor Dhaneria, many a times, drugs may not be used properly and prescribers need to be informed about them. Dr.Shoibal Mukherjee, Senior Director, Pfizer, talked about the clinical data management. He explained that a lot of data were generated during the course of a clinical trial and these data had to be carefully stored and later analysed. Dr Samir Malhotra, Assistant Professor of the Department of Pharmacology, spoke on the importance of biostatistics in clinical research. Prof. P.L.Sharma, Emeritus Professor, from the Department of Pharmacology, PGI, spoke about the role of ethics committees in overseeing clinical research. He explained that ethical issues of clinical research were gaining a lot of importance these days. Therefore, the ethics committee must function properly to ensure that the rights of the subjects were protected. The lecture sessions were followed by a hands-on practical demonstration of the various clinical pharmacological methods. |

Meditation centre stone laid
Mohali, February 21 After laying the foundation stone, Swami Vishvas took the audience into the realm of meditation. In the meditation and the retreat, he explained that meditation was not at all controlling the mind. It was not forcing the mind to be quiet. It was finding the quiet, the peace and the bliss was already there. The sitting lasted for about two hours and all those who were present had a clear feeling of what meditation was and how it could help them to get rid of stress and strain and finally take them to the real goal of self-realisation. The retreat concluded with Prashadam, which was enjoyed by all present. |

Mandeep declared best athlete
Chandigarh, February 21 The meet got off to a colourful start. Ms Nirmal Milkha Singh, took the salute of the marching contingents and declared the meet open. Over 400 students took part in 20 different track and field events. Colour and gaiety were added to the closing ceremony with a brilliant aerobics demonstration by students, a fancy dress competition and cultural events comprising Haryanvi and western dances. Mr Surinder Singla, Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, gave away the prizes to the winners. Chandigarh, February 21 In the first match against Vikram University, Ujjain, Jaspreet and Vareen collected two homes each while Navneet, Jyothi, Jyotika, Amanpreet, Harpreet, Rajinder and Navdeep got a single home each for the winners. In the second match of the day against Bikaner University, Jaspreet, Navneet and Viren got two homes each while Jyothi, Jyothika, Harman, Amanpreet and Harpreet collected one home for their team. |

St Stephen’s to host carrom match on March 7
Chandigarh, February 21 The series will start from March 4 and the first match will be played at New Delhi to commemorate the day when the All-India Carrom Federation will complete 50 years of its formation. The third test match of the series is scheduled to be held on March 10 at Dehradun. This is the second time when an International event is being played in Chandigarh. Earlier, the German team had visited the city to play Indo-German Carrom Test Series in February 1995. |
