Training for AIDS counsellors begins
Chandigarh, February 27 Dr Sonia Trikha threw light on situation of HIV/AIDS, role of counsellor and importance of counselling. Ms Amrik Kaur spoke about the objectives of the training. Dr J.S. Thakur of the School of Public Health said the training would have 20 sessions which would be covered by 10 resource persons. In the second session, Dr Thakur introduced the concepts of counselling through role-play and group work. Dr Amarjeet Singh, Professor, School Of Public Health, presented a discussion on "Values and attitudes of good counsellor" by narrating an interesting story for exploring attitude, followed by group discussion and group activity. |
Ashwani enters boxing finals
Chandigarh, February 27 In another semifinal bout in the featherweight category, V. Shiva of HP gave a tough fight to B. Pyangrope but lost 29-32. Under the bantamweight category, local pugilist Suresh Singh proved too tough for H.K. Belwel and beat him 20-11.

Cricket fans queue up for tickets
Mohali, February 27 The PCA has set up four sale counters, three at Sectors 37, 47, Chandigarh and Phase VII Mohali, branches of HDFC Bank and fourth at one at its premises to cater to the demand of the city people. Besides these, the cricket buffs can also reserve their seat by purchasing tickets online by clicking on to www.cricketpunjab.com. Today the counters witnessed long queues of cricket enthusiasts due to delay in starting the sale of tickets. The general block was much in demand as 500 tickets were sold out on the very first day. The terrace block was second with the sale of 225 tickets following the chair block (125), AC block (120) and members (92). The capacity of general block is 22,000 while terrace and AC block have 2,250 and 400 seats, respectively. There are 5,600 seats each in chair block and members block. “Apart from local fans, we are expecting more than 3,000 cricket buffs from Britain as a lot of inquiries are coming from there for the purchasing of tickets,” said Mr M P Pandove, Joint Secretary, BCCI and honorary secretary, PCA. Mr Pandove also assured of better arrangements this time during the match. “We have numbered every seat of chair, members, terrace and AC blocks to ensure the seats for the purchasers”, added Mr Pandove. A high-level meeting of the officials, presided by Mr K R Lakhanpal, Chief Secretary, Punjab, will be held tomorrow on the PCA premises to review the overall arrangements for the match. However, many parents seemed unhappy over the holding of the match during the final examinations of their wards. “The match will definitely affect the concentration of the students during the most crucial time of the year. The timings should be considered by the officials concerned before finalising the dates of such international ties,” rued Mr Deepak Kalsi, a parent.

Shuttle King to train UT players
Chandigarh, February 27 It will be a great opportunity for the local shuttlers to play under Satish Bhatia, who earned the nickname of Badminton King for his unplayable spin service. It was in the 1969 world badminton championship in Tokyo that Satish set the courts ablaze with his "spin" service. He created the first upset when he defeated world number two, Muljadi of Indonesia, in straight games (15-6,15-7). And then, pitted against Rudy Hartono, Satish lost an extended game at 13-18. But he was back with his unplayable serves in the second game which he won 15-11. In the decider, Satish was on the verge of creating one of the biggest upsets when he had a matchpoint against Rudy. But the eight-time world champion, fought back to take the third game at 18-17, to clinch the trophy. The upsets made the badminton pundits look up. The Shuttle King, as Satish was nicknamed, was flown to London for a demonstration of his spin service. The committee found nothing wrong in his service. Satish who
attended a seminar on coaching at Bangkok, is also on the national panel of coaches. He coached and accompanied the Indian team for the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games and the Asiad. He played for the nation in the ninth Commonwealth Games, the Thomas Cup and the Asian Games. |

The duo, Prof KPS Shante and Ms Sharda, defeated their opponent pair, Prof Rakesh Thakur and Prof Reddy Giri, 15-09, 15-13 on the inaugural day of the 3rd Captain Rohit Kaushal Memorial Inter- College Teachers Badminton tournament held at Badminton Hall of Government College, Sector 11, here today. The meet was inaugurated by the father of the martyr, Mr S.S. Kaushal, former Director of Education, Haryana. As many as 50 teachers are vying for the prestigious running trophy, instituted by a charitable trust made by his family members in the memory of Captain Rohit Kaushal, who laid down his life during an encounter with militants at Mulwanu in Doda district in November, 1994. He was awarded with the Sena Medal posthumously. |
