25 Tis Hazari lawyers face contempt charges
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 27
Taking a tough stand against the ongoing strike by lawyers of Tis Hazari Courts against shifting of certain courts to the new District Court complex at Rohini in North-West of the Capital, the Delhi High Court today barred them from holding demonstrations within a 500-metre radius of any court complex and initiated contempt proceedings against 25 advocates.

A five-judge full court Bench, headed by Chief Justice Marakandey Katju took the unprecedented action against the lawyers for “interfering” in the justice delivery system and “vandalising” Tis Hazari Courts in the course of their on-going agitation.

The court said the members of the Delhi Bar Association, representing the lawyers of Tis Hazari Courts, carrying out the agitation, would not hold any rally or demonstration within 500 metres of Tis Hazari or any other court and tribunals in the Capital till March 8, the next date of hearing.

The court took suo motu action in this regard in an emergency sitting in view of alleged vandalism of 26 courts in the Tis Hazari complex on February 24 by some lawyers and “assaulting” of some judicial officers.

The 25 lawyers issued contempt notices were directed to file their replies and the matter was posted for further hearing on March 8.
