IAEA report sent to Security Council
Immediate sanctions on Iran ruled out
New Delhi, March 9
IAEA Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei transmitted his report on Iran’s nuclear programme to the UN Security Council, at the close of the Agency´s Board of Governors meeting in Vienna today. He described it as “a new phase of diplomacy” and called for a “cool-headed approach” from all parties.

Within a day of the Punjab Police having picked up Khalistan ideologue Dr Jagjit Singh Chohan, the Mohali police today arrested Khalistan sympathiser Kanwarpal Singh Dhami of the Akal Federation on charges of sedition and making anti-national statements.

Ludhiana, March 9
Mr Daljit Singh Bittu, president of the Shiromani Khalsa Dal, today alleged that there was a “definite design” by the Indian state to malign the image of people, who were fighting for their democratic and constitutional rights. He regretted that certain media organisations also appeared to be playing into the hands of the (Indian) state and were becoming part of the design. (Details in Punjab page)

Sikh MPs meet Home Minister

Peeved by the telecast of a talk show, featuring some leaders of the erstwhile "Khalistan" movement, in a popular TV channel, some Sikh MPs today met Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and sought a probe into what provoked the channel to run the programme almost 15 years after the separatist movement had died.

Sketches of suspects released
Lashkar-e-Kahar claims triggering Varanasi blasts
Varanasi, March 9
The police today released computer-generated sketches of two suspected terrorist behind the serial blasts in Varanasi. Eyewitnesses confirmed that the likeness was of the two persons who had left a bag containing a pressure cooker containing bombs at a roadside “golgappa” vendor near the Ganges hotel.
