Justice Jain may be elevated to S.Court

The Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Mr Justice DK Jain, is likely to be elevated to the Supreme Court by mid-April. According to sources, the collegium of the Supreme Court last week recommended his elevation to the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Jain will fill the vacancy arising after the retirement of Mr Justice Arun Kumar of the Supreme Court next month.

Along with him, the name of Mr Justice Markanday Katju, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, is also learnt to have been recommended.

The recommendation has been forwarded to the Union Law Ministry for further action.

Chief Justice Jain took over as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on March 11 last year following the transfer of the then Chief Justice, Mr Justice B.K. Roy to Guwahati High Court.

Mr Justice Jain was Judge of the Delhi High Court before his elevation as Chief Justice.

Meanwhile, there are indications that the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, Mr Justice Vinod Kumar Gupta, could be shifted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

A highly regarded Chief Justice, Mr Justice Gupta is known for his judicial and administrative skills.
