UPA changes Centre’s stand on Ayodhya New Delhi, April 19 The change in the Centre's stand was contrary to the NDA government's submission that December 6, 1992, demolition was a "spontaneous" action of "Kar Sevak" who had assembled in Ayodhya. The Babri Masjid "demolition was in pursuant to a conspiracy to build Ram Temple in its place," a voluminous document placed before the commission here by the Centre said. The government put the blame for it mainly on the then Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, members of his Council of Ministers, BJP and its leaders, some organisations and some individuals, without clearly identifying them. It said the alleged "conspiracy" was evident from the fact that then UP Chief Minister had visited the makeshift Ram Temple with other ministers of his Cabinet after the demolition. These people "therefore took various steps to demolish Ram-Janambhoomi—Babri Masjid structure and construction of the temple and to achieve this objective," the Centre said in its nearly 500-page submission. The commission, while giving last opportunity to the Centre to submit its final statement, had said the government was directed to submit its "perception" regarding the role of organisations, agencies and individuals in the entire episode. The Centre said though the UP Government had given repeated assurances about the security of the structure as well on the implementation of court orders, it failed to implement them. "It was an act of national shame, what was demolished was not merely an ancient structure but the faith of the minorities in the sense of justice and fair play of the majority," the UPA government in its revised stand before the commission said. |
