Engineering college records 100 pc placement

Mohali, May 6
The Chandigarh College of Engineering, Landran, has recorded 100 per cent placement of students of the 2004 and 2005 batches, besides securing the placement of most students of the 2006 batch.

Dr G. D. Bansal, Principal, said within a span of less than six months, 31 companies had already held interviews for B.Tech, MBA and MCA students who would be passing out this year.

A large number of these students had received appointment letters with pay packages of up to Rs 2.5 lakh per annum. The remaining students were also likely to get jobs as talks were in progress with a number of companies which were expected to hold campus interviews in May, June and July, he added.

He said the companies and establishments which had recruited students included L&T Infotech, Syntel, ICICI Prudential, Reliant Media, Punj LLoyd, AKS Technologies, Virsa Systems, India Bulls, Microsoft Corporation, and HDFC Bank.

Mr Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman, and Mr Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary, stated that to facilitate higher education and placements in the international market, the college had signed an MoU with the University of Wolverhampton, UK.

It had also inked an MoU with the British Council for Business English Certificates to be awarded by Cambridge University. Besides, an MoU had been signed with Alpha Net, a US-based MNC, for the training and placement of the students.

Inservice course for KV teachers

Teachers from Kendriya Vidyalayas in Jammu, Dehradun and Chandigarh converged on the campus of KV No 2, 3 BRD, here today for a 21-day inservice course for Trained Graduate Teachers (English).

Inaugurating the course Dr O.D. Sharma, Education Officer, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Chandigarh, highlighted the objectives of holding such training courses.

Mrs Ranjana Bassi, Principal of the venue school and course director, stressed the importance of reviewing the strategies of teaching and learning a language. Mrs Amita Sharma, vice-principal and associate director, spelt out the tasks to be achieved. Ms Jatinder Kaur, PGT, KV, OCF, Sector 29, Ms Neena Bhardwaj, PGT, KV, High Grounds, and Ms Narender Kaur, KV 5, Bathinda Cantt, are the resource persons for the course.

Mr Zafar Iqbal, TGT, KV2, Chandi Mandir, is the master trainer in the computer-aided programme. Ms Tripta Singh, vice-principal of the venue school, proposed a vote of thanks.

Migration certificate not required: PU

The Panjab University senate has taken a decision that students desirous of pursuing diploma/certificate courses of the university can register themselves without producing migration certificate from the parent university/institution from where they come. Migration certificate in such cases would not be demanded but the students have to submit a no-objection certificate from the parent university or institution.

This facility will come into force from the 2006-2007 session as per a press note by the Assistant Registrar (R&S), Panjab University.

Meeting of Sikh institute heads

The annual general body meeting of the Sikh Educational Society was held today at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College Complex. Principals of various institutions of the SGGS presented the progress report of their institutes. The audit reports and balance sheets for 2005-2006 were presented and approved by the general body.

Proposed estimates for the 2006-2007 session were also discussed, besides new plans for the forthcoming session.

Award for Manav Mangal Principal

Mother’s Day

Students of Little Flower Convent School, Sector 14, here today celebrated Mother’s Day. The little ones welcomed their mothers with handmade cards and decorated roses. The function started with a narration on the role of mothers. This was followed by a prayer.

Students of BKM Vishvas School, Sector 9, also presented a cultural programme to mark Mother’s Day.

Golden era of Hindi music recreated

The golden era of Hindi film music was recreated again at “Bollywood Bites” at the Tagore Theatre here this evening by Rinku Kalia, a winner at Zee TV’s “Sa Re Ga Ma”.

Kicking off the show, the singer transported a packed auditorium to the world of melody. The audience loved “Ye sama”, “lag ja gale”, “beetab dil ki” and “rangila re”, immortalised by Lala Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle.

Duets, including “chura liya hai”, “ik pyar ka nagma hai”, “tum pass aaye” with Harkesh Thakur, Ajay Bakshi and Ramesh Kumar, and Arun mesmerised the gathering, which included Mr Pawan Bansal, Union Minister of State for Finance.

The foot-tapping Asha numbers “ye hai reshmi julfon ka andhera” and melodious numbers “sola baras ki bali umar ko salaam” and “jab chali thandi hawa” had the audience asking for more. Richa Sharma and Jaspreet Jassal also enthralled the audience.

Compering was done by Jainendra Singh, a senior broadcaster with the AIR, who was ably supported by Deepti Makan. The music was arranged by music director Raman Kant. The Steps, a dance troupe from Chandigarh also performed on the occasion.

Earlier, rich tributes were paid to the legendary music composer Naushad who passed away recently by rendering a couple of soulful numbers. The show was sponsored by the Silver City Group of Companies, Allengers, Lakshmi Overseas Group of Companies and Swami Vivekanand Group of Institutes.

A musical tribute to Batalvi

When life goes through torment and moves towards a virtual wreck, it is poetry or art which comes as a solace and eventually resurrects it to a meaningful living, said Padma Bhushan S. Anjum while paying tributes to Shiv Kumar Batalvi and music director Naushad Ali.

Artistes of the Swar Lehar musical group paid tributes to the legendary poet Batalvi in an emotion-packed musical soiree titled “Birha Tu Sultan” under the music direction of Varinder Bachan at Tagore Theatre here yesterday.

The programme, the seventh in a series, got off to a majestic start with the playing of a specially composed musical piece to commemorate the 33rd death anniversary of the poet.

The audience paid rapt attention to the 16 songs presented by artistes affirming the magic of the poetic genius of Shiv Batalvi, the king of pathos.

Dr Sahib Singh compered the programme with admirable competence. The songs represented various moods captured by Batalvi.
