Rohtak, May 6
Fourteen persons were killed and four injured, one of them seriously, when a maxi cab collided with an oil tanker head on at Bhagwatipur village, about 12 km from here, this evening.
The accident took place around 5 pm when the speeding maxi cab was passing through a stretch of road where visibility was almost zero because of smoke from a roadside field in which wheat stumps had been set on fire.
The driver of the cab failed to see the oncoming oil tanker and crashed into it at full speed. All 14 persons died on the spot. Six of them have been identified as Sunil, Sita Ram, Ravi Dutt, Anil, Mangal and Suresh.
The four injured persons were sent to the local Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. Three of them had deep gashes on their faces, legs and arms. The wounds were stitched and bandaged by doctors. They were stated to be out of danger. The seriously injured person suffered head injuries.
The ill-fated cab was overloaded because of the weekend evening and the strike by Haryana Roadways workers. Senior officials have rushed to the spot.
