Encroachment on roads removed in Kapurthala
Kapurthala, May 18 The municipal officials said the drive would be made regular to deter shopkeepers from encroaching roadsides. They said it made the roads narrow resulting in traffic chaos. Accompanied by a police team and several labourers, municipal executive officer R.K. Mittal and SDM A.K. Sikka began the drive removing encroachments in front of the bus stand, Amritsar octroi post, Satya Narayan Bazar and Red Cross Market. Though several shopkeepers, on their own, had vacated areas they had encroached upon. The officials tried to avoid lifting the articles of the shops and tried to counsel the affected shopkeepers. However, in the evening, many shopkeepers in the Red Cross Market were seen encroaching upon the roadsides again. Mr Mittal said the Municipal Committee would continue with the drive once a week and legal proceedings would be initiated against the defaulters. The drive is being carried out on the instructions of the Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner Raminder Singh. Officials of the Revenue Department, Village Development and Panchayat Department, Police, PWD, Forest Department and Punjab Mandi Board have been asked to help in the drive. It was alleged that farmers had encroached upon the roads adjoining their fields resulting in the narrowing of the link roads. |

Ordeal continues for residents of Bhargo Camp area
Jalandhar, May 18 Life is an ordeal for them without basic amenities like bathrooms, washrooms and even water supply. Adding to the woes has been the storm, rising mercury level and rains. The Municipal Corporation halted its ambitious drive in the area after a stay from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The women of the area have been the worst sufferers. In the absence of personal toilets, they said they had to go to their neighbours’ houses. Sona, a young widow, with a one-and-half-year-old daughter, lives on the first floor of her in-laws’ house and works as a domestic maid. The drive brought down the only way to her room. She has to climb a wooden stair with her child many times a day to reach her room. The authorities admitted of the plight but said that it would be settled with time. In another case, nine persons are staying in a single room after the rest of the house was demolished. “We have to stretch out to the street in the night to sleep,” Tarsem Lal said. He lives with three brothers. Their bathroom too was demolished. The weather added to their woes, with the recent storm and rains. “Only we know how hard it is to go through a day. There is no one to help us,” Tarsem Lal added. Facing similar ordeal is 65-year-old Kaushalya who lives in a family of 18 in a house much-reduced in size after the demolition. There is a shortage of toilets in the area. The MC had announced a compensation of Rs 2,000 to people who had lost their washrooms in the demolition drive, provided they bought a Rs 5 form. Photocopies were not allowed. MC officials said the forms were in a serial order and only the forms bought from them would be accepted. The residents alleged that the compensation was being delayed. |
