Against all odds, he came up trumps
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 29
Defying all the odds and injustice, a visually impaired athlete Sunil Kumar made himself a metaphor of determination and grit.

The six feet two-inch tall, well-built Sunil Kumar of Mundh, a small village of Karnal district, shone by clinching top honours in discus throw event during the Electrabel Paralympics Championship, held at Blankenberge-Flanders, Belgium, recently. And this is not the first time that he won honours for the country at an international level.

“Instead of learning odd tasks to sustain myself, I wanted to do something different So I adopted sports and at the moment, I was satisfied with my achievements. I will try to bring more glories to my country”, said Sunil confidently.

Giving credit of his success to his family, Sunil, a son of farmer and the youngest of three siblings, confided, “What I achieve today is just because of my family support. They never discourage me and instead, they fulfil every demand made by me”.

Showing grudges over the indifferent attitude of the government towards ‘special sportspersons’, Sunil was of the view: “Till date, no government agency or official has come forward to boost my morale and also there is no financial help from their side. The government should amend their ways while treating disabled players. We should be treated like normal sportspersons and should be provided with all kind of paraphernalia along with financial support”.
