Credited with initiating few laparoscopic procedures for the first time in the region, Dr Navin C. Raina,senior consultant surgeon, Fortis Hospital, Mohali, has been invited to attend a fellowship programme on advanced laparoscopic surgery in the USA in mid-June at Charlotte under the auspices of the society of American Gastro-Intestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).

Badminton title for Utsav Mishra

Defending champion Utsav Mishra of AG UP thrashed local lad Ashish Sharma to lift the trophy in the North Zone Audit and Accounts Department Badminton Championship at badminton hall, sports complex, Sector 42, here today.

Besides winning the singles trophy, the UP pair of Utsav Mishra and Salil Srivastava gave their state another delight by winning the men’s doubles final after beating Punjab’s Ashish Sharma and Amit Sachedva by 19-21, 23-21, 21-10.

Earlier, in a one-sided affair, Utsav routed Ashish Sharma by 21-13, 21-12 to bag the title in men’s singles finals.

In the doubles final, Utsav Mishra and Salil Srivastava faced tough resistance from the duo of Ashish Sharma and Amit Sachedva but in the end the former had the last laugh.

The first set was won by Ashish and Amit with a close margin at 21-19. In the second set, Ashish and Amit took a quick lead by 19-15 but Utsav and Salil bounced back soon with some fine display of drop shots and smashes and thus registered their victory by 23-21.

In the decider, Utsav and Salil proved too strong to Ashish and Amit in every department of the game and thus outplaying them easily won the set and game by 21-10.

The chief guest, Padma Shri Pargat Singh, Director Sports, Punjab, gave away the prizes to the winners and runner ups. Mr Onkar Nath, Accountant General (A&E) Punjab and Union Territory, Chandigarh, presided over the prize distribution function.

The results are as follow: Men’s singles final: Utsav Mishra beat Ashish Sharma by 21-13, 21-12. Men’s doubles final: Utsav Mishra/Salil Srivastava beat Ashish Sharma/Amit Sachdeva by 19-21, 23-21, 21-10.

Srijan beats Kapil

Srijan of DAV Public School, Sector 8, registered a hard-fought three-set victory 7-5, 6-7 (0), 7-6 (3) over Dhaval Kapil of St Kabir Public School, Sector 26 in an absorbing under-12 semifinal of the Lake Club Tennis Round Robin championship for trainees at the Lake Club here today.

Srijan’s opponent in the final will be Harmeet Singh, who caused an upset by shocking favourite Shubham Vij of St John’s , Sector 26 in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. In the 10-player league programme, Srijan Uppal, Harmeet Singh of Guru Nanak Public School , Sector 36 and Shubham Vij of St John’s , Sector 26 had qualified for the semi-finals. Srijan, Harmeet and Shubham had 17 points each. Dhaval Kapil secured 15 points. Rehatbir Singh Mann of St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, got the better of Nikhal Bansal of St Kabir, Sector 26, in the under-14 semi-final.

The results: under-12 (semifinals): Srijan Uppal (17) bt Dhaval Kapil (15) 7-5, 6-7 (0), 7-6 (3) Harmeet Singh (17) bt Shubham Vij (17) 6-4, 6-4

Unbeaten century by Gajinder

Mohali, June 7
An unbeaten century (124) by Gajinder went in vain as Patiala could pile up only 270 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the stipulated 95overs and put Chandigarh in a strong position on the second day of the final match of the Punjab (under -19) Cricket Meet for Dhruv Pandove Trophy at the PCA Stadium, here, today.

Patiala started their first innings and inform batsmen Kunwar Rana and Ravinder Singh lost their wickets cheaply at a meagre score of seven runs. Patiala were on 27 when their third batsman Jeevanjot was out.

It was only Gajinder and Amitoj of Patiala who showed some resistance. Amitoj scored 80 runs with the help of six fours and two sixes but after his fall, Gajinder remained unbeaten at 124 which included 14 fours. With this, Chandigarh got a lead of 160 runs.

Brief score: Patiala: 270 for 8 in 95 overs.

Amitoj 80, Gajinder 124

Naresh Gojian 2 for 79, Gaurav 2 for 58.

Chandigarh 22 runs in 4 overs for no loss.
