Kapurthala, June 9
The Kapurthala police today claimed to have solved the double murder case of the retired Deputy Commandant of BSF, Mohinder Singh, and his wife Daljit Kaur, with the arrest of three persons — the widow daughter-in-law of the couple, Gurjit Kaur, her paramour Ajay Kumar and his friend Rajinder in this connection.

The couple was found shot dead in their bedroom on Wednesday morning. The Deputy Commandant was shot in the head, while Daljit Kaur was shot in the head and stomach after she was stabbed repeatedly and hit by a hammer on her head.

Mr Rajiv Ahir, SSP, Kapurthala, told media persons in a press conference that Gurjit Kaur had developed illicit relations with Ajay Kumar, a ‘munshi’ and a resident of Kapurthala. Gurjit Kaur and her parents had strained relations with the deceased couple, as they did not agree to the remarriage of Gurpreet Kaur with their younger son Apaar Singh after the death of their elder son, informed the SSP.

Apaar Singh got married recently and is now settled in the USA. Four months back, Gurjit Kaur asked Ajay Kumar to eliminate the couple and offered him Rs 4 lakh for this. Ajay, along with his friend Rajinder, procured a country-made pistol with the help of an unidentified person from Betia in Bihar, Mr Ahir said.

The money was arranged by Gurjit Kaur in cash and she also gave her gold chain to Ajay for the purpose. Gurjit Kaur also promised Ajay to pay Rs 4 lakh from the savings account of the deceased couple after their murder over a period of time, revealed the SSP. Gurjit Kaur guided the assailants about intruding into the house telling them that they could enter the house through the terrace door on the roof, said Mr Ahir.

Apart from opening up of control rooms, the PSEB authorities have also directed all of its field staff, including Executive Engineers, SDOs, and Junior Engineers, to remain present at their respective headquarters during the ongoing paddy season, which runs up to September 30.

In case of any power supply related problem, the agriculture sector consumers could contact the PSEB officials at its control rooms in the four districts circles, which have been equipped with both land line telephones and mobile phones. Mr Gill has also requested senior officers to check up the working of complaint centers daily with regard to attendance of telephone enquiries and complaints.

Exhorting farmers to not to pay any money, in case any demand was made by any official for the replacement of damaged transformers, Mr Gill said that the damaged transformers would be replaced by the PSEB at its own cost.

Speaking on the measures adopted by the PSEB to meet any natural calamities, particularly floods, Mr Gill said that elaborate arrangements were being made by the board to tackle such situations. The PSEB was busy making the lists of officers to be deputed for the purpose. The list would be shortly supplied to the district administration.

PTU likely to declare CET result on June 12
Deepkamal Kaur
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, June 9
Even as the Punjab Technical University (PTU) had earlier set June 15 as the date for declaring the result of the Common Entrance Test conducted for B. Tech, B. Pharmacy and B. Architecture courses for its own colleges and those affiliated to the Punjabi University and the Guru Nanak Dev University, it is likely to come out with the result on June 12.

The university Vice-Chancellor, Dr S.K. Salwan, said that the result of the entrance test had already been prepared and the manual checking of the samples from different sets of question papers was on to verify the result shown by the computer software. He added that this was being done thoroughly to prevent any errors in the result as had happened last year. He said that if everything went on smoothly, the result would be out on coming Monday.

Even as the university had received applications of nearly 19,000 candidates, 17,103 candidates had appeared for the test, the university officials said.

After a gap of nearly three years, the number of candidates this year was above the number of total seats that is 12,000.

Interestingly, against the norms laid down by the university, almost all colleges have already filled their 33 per cent management quota seats. Most of the top B.Tech colleges, affiliated to the university, have already saturated their seats and they are openly doing this by advertising the same through various media. While filling these seats much before the CET counselling has become an annual affair, the university officials have reportedly never taken any action on the erring colleges.

Realising that they can easily get a sure shot seat through management quota in a college of their choice, many candidates do not even appear for the mandatory CET examination. This at a later stage also becomes a problem for the university, as most students entering through this system find it very difficult to clear their B.Tech examination bringing down the pass percentage of the university to as low as 40 per cent in many subjects involving mathematics.

The university has 41 affiliated engineering colleges that offer nearly 19 streams, including bio-medical engineering and automobile engineering that started last year in a few colleges. Almost all colleges offer electronic engineering that has had maximum response from the students in the previous years. There are as many as 1,260 seats for the stream as against the civil engineering course which has just 280 seats in all. But the university VC believes that civil engineers will have the brightest future in the times to come going by the number of openings available for them in road construction sector, bridges, flyovers, housing and industrial development.

Dr Salwan said that from the next year onwards, the seats for B.Tech in manufacturing engineering for the proposed Lord Swraj Paul School of Excellence would also go for counselling through the CET.

He added that the seats for B.Tech in material sciences would, however, be added up two years later.

NGO appoints new state president
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, June 9
The Union for Civil Liberties and Human Rights, a Shimla-based NGO, has appointed Mr Amarjit Singh Rai from Jalalabad as its state president. The NGO has withdrawn the power of attorney granted to its “former” state president following an enquiry conducted by the Honourary National President into some complaints received from the former.

In a statement, Mr S.S. Kanwar, an office-bearer of the NGO, said that the then state president had complained that a local organisation had harmed some cows in the process of “encroaching upon Municipal land” recently.

But the subsequent enquiry, conducted by the Honorary National President, found that there was no reason to believe that any cow had been harmed. It was also found, according to Mr Kanwar, that in fact, the path being acquired was to provide access to Sri Devi Talaab Charitable Hospital, which was rendering yeoman’s service to the community.
