New Delhi, June 9
The Election Commission would hear Samajwadi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh on June 16 on a petition accusing him of holding office of profit and seeking his disqualification.
The EC had earlier issued a notice to Mr Amar Singh for his reply to the petition. The Samajwadi Party leader had sought extension of time on two occasions, which was given, EC sources said.
He might appear or send his counsel on June 16, they said.
The EC had acted on a reference from the President on a complaint seeking Mr Amar Singh’s disqualification on the ground that as Chairperson of Uttar Pradesh Development Council he held an office of profit and attracted disqualification.
The commission had earlier disqualified SP leader Jaya Bachchan for holding office of profit. The poll panel is examining petitions against around 40 MPs and over 300 MLAs, including Chief Ministers of different states, for holding office of profit.
