Gambler’s paradise

Las Vegas: Examining the power behind the megacity
Las Vegas: Examining the power behind the megacity

WHEN you think gambling, you think Las Vegas — a man-made oasis in the middle of the desert. However, the secret behind Las Vegas is not gambling but electricity and without it, the city will shrivel and die. Power lines are its arteries.

Best of America — Las Vegas 9 p.m. June 28 on National Geographic takes viewers inside Las Vegas’ incredible generation and distribution systems and examines current transformations that are occurring in order to prevent a possible blackout.

The show reveals that Las Vegas power grid is a network of six power plants fuelled by nearly every source of energy — hydro-electric, coal and natural gas. Together, these plants pump electricity along nearly 16,000 km of power lines.

The character of this neon play land is matched by the people who keep it running — from motorbike-riding linesmen to the live wire helicopter workers. And it is clear that in a city built on risk, power is the window to the soul. Because keeping this mega city humming is the biggest gamble.

HERE’S some good news for those who are missing Sarabhai vs Sarabhai which completed its run on Star One recently. The hugely popular sitcom will soon begin its second season with a spicier script and more taut characterisation.

However, the story will pick up seven years from where it left off. The comedy that was one of the few popular shows credited with establishing Star One as a prime entertainment channel features a dysfunctional family in Mumbai’s Malabar Hill.

Indravadan Sarabhai (Satish Shah) is a retired MNC honcho and his snobbish wife Maya (Ratna Shah) who finds her daughter-in-law very middle class. The women are constantly at loggerheads with Shah.

Though it is not yet decided, on which channel the show will be aired on, decks have been cleared for the shooting and the serial should be on-air in August. — NF
