HIV test centres at subdivisions soon

Chandigarh, June 27
The seventh executive meeting of the Haryana AIDS Control Society was held in Panchkula today. The meeting was presided over by Urvashi Gulati, Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Haryana Health and Medical Education Department-cum-Chairperson, HACS. Dr N.K. Sharma, DGHS-cum-Project Director (HACS) and other members of the executive from the Department of Labour, Education, ICDS, Finance and PGI MS, Rohtak, were present at the meeting.

In the opening message, FCHM congratulated HACS for containing the infection below 1 per cent in ANC and blood safety. She appreciated the activities carried out by HACS and urged the full cooperation of all departments to fight AIDS. She said that HIV test centre would be started at subdivisional level also.

Jasbir wins top honours

Chandigarh, June 27
Jasbir Singh of Punjab State Electricity Board won the top honours in 5000 m race in the three-day 32nd All India State Electricity Sports Control Board athletics meet which started at Sports Complex, Sector 7, here today.

As many as 250 athletes of 10 state electricity departments are participating in the meet.

Earlier, the Home Secretary, Mr Krishna Mohan, inaugurated the meet.

The other result of the meet are as follow:

5000 mts: 1 Jasvir Singh, 2 Tejinder Singh, 3 N Thanga Darai;

long jump: 1 Anil Kumar, 2 Moah S, 3 Srinivasan;

Shot put:

Bhupinder Singh, 2 Surjit Singh, 3 Nawab Singh;

Javelin throw: 1 Nirmal Singh, 2 Purushotma, 3 Navjot;

800 m: 1 Jasvir Singh, 2 Vijay Pal, 3 Raj Kumar.

3533 liquor bottles destroyed

Panchkula, June 27
The District Excise and Taxation Department today destroyed 3533 bottles of liquor recovered in last three months from different members of an inter-state liquor mafia active in this part of the state.

According to Mr JS Chahal, District Excise and Taxation Officer (Excise), the destroyed bottles include 844 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), 29 bottles of beer and 2660 bottles of Country Made Liquor (CML). The bottles were marked for sale in Chandigarh, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh but the gangsters had been smuggling these to Haryana. A penalty of Rs 4 lakh has also been slapped on the liquor smugglers besides impounding the vehicles used in the crime, he claimed.

Mr Chahal informed that 13,745 bottles (8453 bottles of IMFL, 12 of beer and 5280 of CML) were recovered in the first three months of the year. The liquor was destroyed on March 19, 2006.

On December 2, 2005, the department had destroyed over 29,000 bottles of liquor besides panelizing the smugglers Rs 38 lakh. Out of the total penalty amount, the department has managed to recover Rs 27 lakh till date, claimed Mr Chahal.

Smuggling of liquor from Chandigarh to Haryana has witnessed a sharp increase this year, while from Himachal it has declined, he said.

SHO shifted

Chandigarh, June 27
The UT Inspector General of the Police (IGP) today ordered transfer of the SHO of the Sector 3 with immediate effect. A spokesman UT Police said that Inspector Balhar Singh SHO had been transferred to the Operation Cell. He has been replaced by Inspector Rajinder Singh. TNS
