Construction industry shaping up well NAC has emerged as one of the top bodies for the development of all types of construction resources, technologies and methodologies for fast-track completion of projects. Registered as a society and incorporated as a public charitable institution in September 1998, it is managed by a Board of Governors with Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh as chairman. The mission of NAC is to develop a technologically advanced and competitive construction industry which serves India's economic needs. To achieve this, NAC runs various training courses and programmes of relevance to the construction industry.
Diploma in Highway Technology There is a great demand for well- trained Highway Technology professionals, considering the massive investments in the highway sector over the next seven years. The Golden Quadrilateral project of the National Highways Authority of India itself is a massive project, with investments running into millions. The NAC's Post Graduate Diploma in Highway Technology for civil engineering graduates is specifically designed to suit the needs of the highways sector. "The course offers a unique blend of structured academic study and practical experience, and those who complete the training get placements immediately," said Dr K.B.Chandra Shekhar, course director. Interested candidates can download application form from the website www.nac.edu.in, and filled-in applications can be submitted electronically to training@nac.edu.in. Eligible candidates will be called for an interview to be held in Hyderabad in the first week of July 2006.
Diploma in Facility Management With the boom in construction and creation of complexes, buildings, campuses, malls etc., the demand for Facility Manager (FM) has grown tremendously of late. Facility Management today is a business science, which aims at creating an efficient workplace, supporting a 24/7 work environment. In keeping with the needs of the FM industry, the NAC haD in July 2005 conceived a one-year postgraduate diploma course in Facility Management. The course, including a six-month internship programme, is designed for graduates from any academic background. The course is ideal for professionals in fields such as real estate, planning, resource management, property development, architecture, engineering, commerce and the hospitality industry. The course starts on July 17. Admission details can be had from the NAC website.
Livelihood training programmes "The construction industry employs the largest number of people after agriculture in the country. No wonder, significant opportunities exist in this sector for livelihood for young people from semi-urban and rural areas," says Maj-Gen C.T. Chari (retd), Director-General of NAC. It is in this background that NAC has taken up livelihood training programmes with the objective of creating trained and certified professionals for the industry in areas such as masonry, bar bending, plumbing and sanitation, electrical house wiring, painter and decorator, welder, land surveyor, architect's aide and interior decoration and crafts. The students are trained for three months in their chosen field and are awarded a skill certificate.
Testing and certification for trades NAC has received approval from the Director-General, Employment and Training, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Govt of India, for testing and certification of the skills of the workers in the construction industry for 38 trades. The DGET certification will help construction workers in the unorganised sectors to be recognised. The Protector General of Emigrants, Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India, has accorded license authorising NAC to export human resources abroad. "We have already received request to send 150 technicians to Muscat and Dubai by a reputed company," said the Director-General.
