Nation on red alert

The repeat of 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai today with explosions in seven suburban trains and grenade attacks in Srinagar left the nation dazed forcing the Central government to sound a countrywide red alert after reviewing the security situation in the wake of big toll of human lives.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who reviewed the security situation at a high-level emergency meeting at his residence tonight, condemned the blasts by terming them as a “cowardly attempts to spread a feeling of fear and terror among our citizens.”

Dr Singh condoled the death of over 150 persons in Mumbai and Srinagar, and asked the countrymen to remain calm. He assured the nation that every possible measure would be taken maintain law and order.

“I reiterate our commitment to fighting terror in all its forms…We will work to defeat the evil designs of terrorists and will not allow them to succeed,” the Prime Minister said.

The meeting was attended by Home Minister Shivraj Patil, National Security Adviser M K Narayanan, Home Secretary V K Duggal and IB chief E S L Narasimham.

President A P J Abdul Kalam, expressing anguish, termed the blast as an “inhuman act” and said those responsible for this dastardly crime should be brought to book at the earliest.

After the hour long meeting, Home Minister Shivraj Patil was not in a position tell as to who was responsible for the serial train blasts and any connection between explosions in and reiterated the Government’s determination to fight terrorism.

A high alert has been sounded and security beefed up in airports, railway stations, inter-state bus stands, other important public places and markets across the country.

Besides deploying additional police personnel across the Capital, check posts have been set up at all major points in the city, including railway and bus stations, cinema halls and busy market places.

The blast evoked condemnation from all political parties with Sonia Gandhi terming it as “dastardly and inhuman.” She spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Shivraj Patil asking them to tighten the security measures to ensure the safety of people and maintenance of peace.

The Opposition BJP and Left parties strongly condemned the serial blasts in Mumbai and asked the government to beef up security across the country and restore normalcy.

BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said the party condemns these blasts in the strongest terms… There has been a rise in terror attacks under the UPA because it is soft on terrorism. Initiatives against terrorism have been traded for votes and the message has been very clear to terrorists and their patrons.

CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said “We would also appeal to the people not to fall prey to any provocation. The whole country must unitedly face the situation.”

World leaders condemn Mumbai blasts

Washington, July 11 
The United States, Britain, Pakistan, Afghanistan and South Africa tonight voiced outrage and condemnation of the Mumbai bomb blasts saying they were terrorist acts designed to strike at innocent people.

“Today there were multiple terrorist attacks in India, in Srinagar and in Mumbai. We condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms,” US State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said.

“We have been in touch with the Indian government concerning these attacks and, of course, we will offer any assistance that they might request. I understand that the investigation is ongoing as to who is responsible for these attacks,” he told reporters during his daily briefing here.

Condemning the “brutal and shameful attacks”, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said, “There can never be any justifications for terrorism... we stand united with India, as the world’s largest democracy, through our shared values and our shared determination to defeat terrorism in all its forms.”

Terming the blasts as “despicable act of terrorism”, Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz condemned the attacks.

“Pakistan strongly condemns the series of bomb blasts on commuter trains in Mumbai, India. This despicable act of terrorism has resulted in the loss of a large number of precious lives,” said a statement issued by the Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson. — PTI
