Orissa lift football trophy

Chandigarh, July 27
The last year’s runners up Orissa has become champion after defeating the defending champion Manipur by 1-0 in the finals of third Junior Girls Under-17 National Football Championship at Football Stadium, Sector 17, here today.

In the action packed and evenly contested match, the Orissa’s custodian Ahalya Munda played a key role in wresting the title from defending champion Manipur. She squandered many good attacks of Manipur strikers and saved more than half a dozen goals.

Both teams put up a good show and till half time the score was 0-0. But it was left winger Rashmita Podh, who pierced the strong defence line to net the ball in the 44th minute after getting a pass from her captain Sradhanjali Sahoo.

After conceding a goal, the Manipur team created many chances to score but did not capitalize on it.

Manipur’s Y.Kamala Devi, who emerged the leading striker and goal-scorer of the tournament, too missed all chances came her way.

Orissa, too had a golden chance to score another goal in the 63rd minute but missed as a shot by Jhele Munda hit the pole.

The prizes were distributed by the Chandigarh Football Association president, Mr Ravinder Talwar. Y Kamala Devi of Manipur, Santoseni Oram, Ahalya Munda and Rashmita Podh were adjudged the best players of the tournament.

GMHS-42 thrash Stephen’s 4-2

Riding high on the three goals scored by Sumit, the Government Model High School, Sector 42, thrashed St. Stephen’s, Sector 45, by 4-2 in the Pre-Subroto Mukherjee Football Tournament (Under-14 Boys) at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, here today.

Besides Sumit, Gagan scored a single goal for his team while Johny Chand of St. Stephen netted 2 goals.

Results (Football U-14 boys)

1st match: Government Model High School, Sector 42, beat St. Stephen, Sector 45, by 4-2

2nd match: St. John's, Sector 26, beat Vivek High School, Sector 38, by 5-0.

Results (Hockey U-17 boys)

Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, 4-1.

Bhavan Vidyalya win Rink race

Panchkula, July 27
Bhavan Vidyalya Vikas bagged the first position whereas Rohit Bajaj and Bharat Chaudhary of Manav Mangal remained second and third, respectively, in U-19 boys Rink Race held at Manav Mangal School, Sector 16, here today.

While Aslm of Doon Public School and Mayank Gupta got first in the categories of U-17 and U-14 (boys), respectively.

In another event of Roller Hockey (U-19 boys), Manav Mangal, Sector 11, beat Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, by 4-2 to emerge winners in Panchkula district school games.

In the matches of Volleyball (boys ) it was again Manav Mangal, which dominated the scene by winning two out of three categories. In both U-14 category and U-17 the hosts beat DAV School, Sector 8, Panchkula, by 2-0.

In U-19 years boys category CL DAV beat Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 7, Panchkula 2-1.

The SAS Nagar District Fencing Association has decided to hold the Punjab State Fencing Championship (Sub-junior and cadet) for both boys and girls from July 28 to 30 at Community Centre, Phase 7 here.

Sarpanch suspended for embezzlement

Fatehgarh Sahib, July 27
The Deputy Commissioner, Ms Jaspreet Talwar, today suspended Harjit Singh, sarpanch of Chanarthal Khurd village, for allegedly non-disbursement of pensions for the past three months to its beneficiaries and sending false Actual Pay Reports (APRs) in the office of the District Social Security.

The District Social Security Officer (DSSO), Ms Amrit Bala, has been entrusted to hold an enquiry.

Ms Talwar said she got a complaint from certain beneficiaries of Chanarthal Khurd village alleging that sarpanch was not giving them pensions. Ms Talwar said she had directed the DSSO to look into the matter.

Licences of 4 ration depots suspended

Mohali, July 27
Licences of four persons running government ration depots have been suspended by officials of the Food and Supplies Department on charges of serious irregularities in their working.

In a press note issued here today, it was stated that seven ration depots were inspected by officials of the department during a special campaign launched on the directions of Mr Avtar Henry, Food and Supplies Minister, Punjab, yesterday.

Licences of Inderjit Kaur, Sector 70, Sita Ram, Phase II, Rekha Rani and Inder Singh, both of Phase XI, have been suspended.
