PGI Prof elected rhinology society chief

Dr Ashok Gupta, Professor at the ENT Department of the PGI has been unanimously elected as President of the All-India Rhinology Society at the 19th Annual Conference of the society held at Hyderabad.

Prof Gupta is the first ENT consultant from the PGI to become the President of this prestigious society of ENT which has a membership of over 1500. Dr Rajesh Dhir, an ENT consultant from General Hospital, Sector 16, has been elected as the executive member of the society.

During the conference, Prof Gupta performed live surgical procedure and demonstrated endoscopic repair of CSF Rhinorrhoea. This procedure has been pioneered by him at the PGI and has replaced the conventional craniotomy. This advancement has led to significant reduction in the morbidity.

Prof Gupta has plans not only to conduct a series of such live surgical workshops in hospitals to orient ENT surgeons in this part of the country but also to conduct cadaveric dissection courses to train young surgeons in the field of endoscopic surgery.

Indo-Pak Cricket Cup in Chandigarh

To give exposure to budding cricket players in under 13 and under 16 category, St. John’s Cricket Academy, Sector 26, is hosting Indo-Pak Cricket Cup 2006 at Chandigarh. The series will be held between St. John’s Cricket Academy and St. Anthony’s High School, Lahore, Pakistan, from July 31 to August 3.

Mrs Pushpinder Cheema Principal chief patron-cum-secretary of St. John’s School cricket academy said that St. Anthony’s delegation will consist of 47 members which include two cricket teams under 13 and under 16 age groups along with 20 teachers. The Pakistani delegation will be led by Principal of St. Anthony’s High School Lahore, Pakistan.

Vivek cagers win

Vivek High School, Sector 38, defeated New Public School, Sector 18, by 42-29 points in the boys section on the opening day of Sub-junior Basketball championship held at New Public School, Sector 18, here today. Chetandeep (18 points) and Ranbir (10 points) were the main contributors from Vivek team while Ravinder (10 points) and Sartaj (8 points) contributed mainly for the New Public team.

In the girls section, Sacred Heart, Sector 26, beat Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36 by 15-8 points while in another match, Shishu Niketan girls outclassed St Joseph team by 18-9.

Skating tourney

Aryan of Panchkula bagged the first place in the 4-6 year category during the All-India Open Sardar Sewa Singh John Memorial Gold Cup Skating Tournament which commenced at DAV Public Senior Secondary School, Phase X here today.

As many as 15 teams from Haryana, UP, Uttranchal, Gujarat, Punjab, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Chandigarh participating in the three-day skating carnival.

Results:

Below 4 years (boys): Youj Kapoor 1, Gurleen 2, Shubham 3

Below 4 years (girls): Pranoti 1, Garima 2

4-6 years (boys): Aryan 1, Swaraj 2, Abhishek 3

4-6 years (girls): Jasmine 1, Hrudvi 2, Vidhi 3

10 councillors to go on study tour

The recent controversy surrounding the visit of senior municipal corporation (MC) officials and councillors to Bangalore and Germany is yet to die down, but in yet another decision, 10 MC councillors have been given the green signal by the UT Administration to go for another study tour, this time to Kolkata and Siliguri, scheduled for next month.

Councillors had earlier this year in writing asked for permission to conduct the study tours abroad. The proposal was rejected.

With MC elections slated for the end of this year, study tours being conducted twice and this late were being seen as less of study tours. A few of the councillors going next month were the ones who had signed the letter for a study tour abroad.

The tour would be conducted from August 17 to 24 and would be led by Mr H.S. Lucky. It would include Ms Anu Chatrath, Mr Subhash Chawla, Ms Kamlesh, Mr P.C. Sanghi, Ms Geeta Rani, Ms Harjinder Kaur and Ms Pradeep Chabbra.

Liquor contractor penalised

Chandigarh, July 28
The Collector Excise, Chandigarh, has imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on L-2 licencee, M/s Sai Finlease Pvt Ltd, Sector 45, under Section 80 (2) of the Punjab Excise Act, 1914.

On an inspection, the Excise Department had seized 238 bottles of beer from its premises. The bottles were without the label “For sale in Chandigarh only”.

The licensee also failed to produce sales stock register and inspection notebook at the time of inspection. TNS
