CM gives Rs 5 lakh to kisan club

Ludhiana, August 14
The Chief Minister of Punjab, Capt Amarinder Singh, has given a special grant of Rs 5 lakh to the Punjab Kisan Club — a body of progressive farmers operating under the technical guidance of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.

In his message to the club president, the Chief Minister has observed that such organisations, which had scientific approach, could play a major role in bringing Punjab agriculture out of the present crisis. “The market regime under the WTO has posed many challenges to Punjab farmers, who need to be educated to face these challenges,” he said, adding that the club could take a lead in steering the farmers in the right direction.

PAU’s Associate Professor, Dr V.K.Bhambota, who is in charge of the club, said last year too, the club was given a grant of Rs 5 lakh by the Chief Minister.

The club president, Mr Pavittar Pal Singh Pangli, and the secretary, Mr Hardev Singh Ghanaur, have thanked the Chief Minister and said the club’s endeavour was to spread new agricultural innovations and diversification plans to every village in the state. Mr Pangli has appealed to the Chief Minister to establish public libraries in each village so that farm literature can be made available to every home in a village.

The PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr K.S.Aulakh, and the Director of Extension Education, Dr S.S.Gill, have also thanked the Chief Minister for this grant.

Vets shed light on upkeep of dairy animals

Ludhiana, August 14
A monthly meeting of the Punjab Dairy Farmers Association (PDFA) was held here under the chairmanship of Dr O. S. Parmar, Director of Extension Education, in the Silver Jubilee Block Auditorium of the College of Veterinary Science, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), here today.

More than 200 farmers from various parts of Punjab participated in the seminar. The seminar was attended by Heads of Departments and experts of the GADVASU.

Lecture on producing milk from the sterile and barren animals was delivered by Dr H.K. Verma, Associate Professor of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Department.

A lecture on the feeding of pregnant animals was delivered by Dr Parsu Ram Singh of the Avitech company, Gurgaon.

An open question-answer session was held in which the queries and problems of the dairy farmers were attended by experts.

The Director of Extension Education, Dr Parmar, stressed upon the farmers to get the blood, urine, faeces and milk samples of the diseased animals tested before going for a treatment in consultation with the veterinarian of the area.

Shift from wheat-rice rotation, farmers advised

In his message to farmers, on the eve of Independence Day, PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr. K.S.Aulakh, has said just as the freedom fighters sacrificed their lives to free the country from the clutches of slavery, same way, the people will have to struggle hard to change agricultural economy by adopting the scientific methods.

Dr. Aulakh advised farmers to shift from wheat-rice crop rotation and adopt diversification in agriculture. For this bio-technology can play an important role.

A plan worth Rs.24 crore has been sent to the Punjab Government for implementing the scheme of diversification. "We will have to go for processing of different crops with the help of genetic engineering. Keeping in view the regional needs of the farmers, the university scientists would develop new research techniques", he said.

Dr. Aulakh added that the area under pulse cultivation should be increased. This will improve the soil health. The farmers should sow sathi moongi, oil seed crops and sugarcane in order to increase their income. The scientists engaged in research, extension should make every effort to bring prosperity in the country.

Schools resonate with patriotic fervour

Ludhiana, August 14
The Independence Day was celebrated at the Kids Zone Playway School with enthusiasm.To acquaint children with national heroes, they were asked to come dressed as various leaders.

With Nehru caps and Tricolour in their hands , the children danced on patriotic numbers. The Principal, school staff and students saluted the National Flag.

Jain Public Senior School

The students of the Jain Public Senior Secondary School, celebrated the Independence Day here today.

The students were dressed in attires of various national leaders. Various patriotic songs and dances were presented and their efforts were praised by the Principal, Ms Mridu Ablash.

BVM school

The Independence Day and Janamashtami were celebrated by the Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Kitchlu Nagar, here today. Students of Class 1 dressed up as characters from the Mahabharata whereas Class I students dressed up as various leaders.

Classes III and IV participated in patriotic group-songs while Class V students participated in the Recitation Competition.

Class VI students narrated stories from the Mahabharata . A Declamation Contest was held for Classes VII and VIII. Classes IX and X participated in a debate competition.

Sacred Heart

Students of the Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School celebrated the Independence Day with great fervor. The theme was awakening Indians to India.

Senior students participated in the inter-house choreography competition in which the Gandhi House Bagged the first prize and the second prize went to the Tagore House.

Patriotic songs and a short play on Mother India made the students aware of their duties towards their country. Folk dances by KG And primary sections were simply stunning.

Dil’s Nursery School

To revive the spirit of patriotism, the Independence Day was celebrated by Dil’s Nursery School.

The students came dressed in white and presented an attractive march past and saluted the National Flag.

They sang patriotic numbers. The Principal, Ms Harbans Kaur, told the kids about the importance of the day.

Sat Paul Mittal

The Sat Paul Mittal School celebrated the Independence Day here today.

Lt-Col (retd) Dr D.B. Sharma, Director, held the National Flag and 550 students saluted the National Flag and sang National Anthem.

The programme presented by the students included patriotic songs, and a choreography titled Hum Hindustani.

The children made short speeches and put forth their views on the importance of freedom and how they should uphold it .

Dr Sharma described the struggle of our leaders to gain Independence and told them about the Partition.

Chanda Mama

The Chanda Mama students sang patriotic songs like I love my India. They were told that they were Bharatwasis and Hindustanis.

The children were made aware of the National Flag and the Red Fort from where the National Flag would be hoisted by the Prime Minister.

Lovely Lotus School, a sister school of the Chanda Mama school, children celebrated Janamashtami.

The children chanted Govinda bolo Hari Gopal bolo. The children dressed up as Radha and Krishna and each believed they looked the best.

Spring Dale

Students of the Spring Dale Senior Secondary School celebrated Janamashtami with great fervour.

Stories of Krishnas valour were narrated by some students. A Fancy dress competition was also held. Jasjeet and Parul of Class IV presented a dance and one-year-old Vanipreet played the role of Krishna in the song Kanihya Nae Matki Phori.

Director Avinash Walia stressed upon the students to follow the path shown by the gurus.

Bhartiya Vidya Mandir

A colourful Independence Day function was organised at the Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Senior School Secondary, Udham Singh Nagar, here today.

Tiny tots of the school attired in different colourful dresses represented various characters like Mangal Pandey, Subhash Chander Bose and Mahatma Gandhi.

Students dressed as Radha and Krishna caught the fancy of the audience.

Dance performances like group dance and solo were also worth watching.

Giddha and Bhangra presented by the junior students were also mesmerizing. The audience was kept spellbound throughout the captivating function.

The function concluded with a speech by a Class IX student and address by the Principal, Mrs Sunil Arora, who congratulated the gathering on the occasion.

Preparation for I-Day function

Mandi Ahmedgarh, August 14
With an intention to enable their students and staff participate in the Independence Day celebrations of Municipal Council scheduled to take place at the Town Hall tomorrow, a majority of schools celebrated the national festival today.

Students of local Sanatan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Kennedy Public High School, DAV High School, Janta College for Women, GHG Public School and Lal Bahadur Shastri Public School presented elaborate cultural programmes at their respective institutes today. Patriotic songs, poems, choreographies, skits and folk dances, giddha, malwai gidha and bhangra marked the celebrations.

While the nationalistic items excited patriotic feeling among the viewers, fancy dress display, dances and chitrahar fascinated the more.

Besides felicitating outstanding performers, the organizers selected items to be performed at Municipal Council function, to be held at the Town Hall tomorrow.

Crusade against use of polythene bags sought

Nominated/elected office-bearers of Central Students Association in Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women were felicitated here today . Those felicitated at the installation ceremony included Head Girl Aarti Sharma and Deputy Head Girl, Donia. Resolve was taken by students to rededicate themselves to launch a drive against the use of polythene bags, environmental pollution and malpractice of female foeticide.

The school Principal called upon the students to join hands and launch a crusade against use of polythene bags. She exhorted students to make efforts to create awareness amongst masses about hazards associated with the use of polythene bags. She said use of natural products such as jute bags, paper bags, cloth bags should be encouraged. Government should also impose an immediate ban on the manufacturing and the use of polythenes especially for packing food products.

Though the Constitution provides legal and constitutional procedures to check female feoticide, these steps cannot achieve the desired target without active involvement of the youth.

Saplings were planted on the college premises.

Principal Dr (Mrs) Madanjit Kaur Sahota castigated the practices of destroying forests which need to be curbed for healthier and greeener tomorrow. Exhibition showing bags made of other materials than polythene was well appreciated.

The Principal appreciated the efforts of fine arts department for providing a platform to students to showcase their talent.

The new office-bearers of the union were announced by him.The post of the president went to Mr Karam Singh of Government Senior Secondary School, Talwandi Rai, Mr Avdesh Kumar, senior president, is from Government Senior Secondary School, Bassian. Mr Bhadur Singh, secretary, is from Government Secondary School, Nathowal, and Mr Chander Kaur is cashier. She is from Government Senior Secondary School, Chorarda. Mr Sukwinder Singh of Government Senior Secondary School, Karir Sahib, Libra is adviser.

Festival concludes with “Ghumayee”

Never before has any festival of plays in any regional language elicited such on applause from theatre lovers as the Jammu-based ensample “Natrang”.

The four-day drama festival, Theatre Days, held under the aegis of the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademy concluded yesterday with Dogri play “Ghumayee” providing the grand finale and the director, Balwant Thakur, getting the standing ovation from the crowd.

The play was based on a Dogri folk tale depicting the casual attitude of the bridegroom when the newly wed bride desperately needs water to quench her thirst while on way to her in-laws house.

Such was the impact of the presentation that the crowd responded to every emotional outburst by the actors. Vikrant Sharma, Pankaj, Anjali Abrol satish and others gave a superb performance.

The music repertoire led by the versatile Sooraj Singh, three-times winner of “Sa Re Ga Ma” competition and Mumbai-based singer Tanya Gupta was the lifeline of the production.

Thespian Atulvir Arora honoured the artistes while academy vice-chairman Kamal Arora coordinated the festival.
