Medical body decries Patran incident

The Indian Medical Association has taken serious note of cases of female foeticide at Patran and will not support such doctors who bring a bad name to the noble profession, said Chairman of the legal cell, Punjab, Dr O P S Kande at a meeting held at the Golden Grain Club today.

Dr Kande exhorted the medical fraternity to desist from such practice. Dr Vinod Sood, Secretary, IMA, Khanna, said due to this unhealthy trend, the female ratio had come down to 850 against 1000 males

The former Civil Surgeon, Dr Dharam Pal, CMO Balwinder Singh Kalsi, Dr Amarbir Singh, Dr. B K Aggarwal, Dr J J Sood , Dr. N P S Virk and Dr N K Singla were present on the occasion.

Budding cagers given basketballs

To make the game of basketball more popular and also to identify the hidden talent among the rural youth, the Punjab Basketball Association (PBA) has chalked out a plan to organise tournaments in the countryside. To promote the game among schoolchildren, the PBA distributed basketballs to more than 300 students. The budding players were given the balls at a function organised at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill, president, Basketball Federation of India, was the chief guest. The articles were sponsored by former national basketball player and journalist, (now settled in Canada), Surinder Pal Singh Chahal and Mr Lakhbir Singh, also from Canada.

Talking over the telephone from Canada, Mr Chahal informed that to make this game popular among the boys and girls in the sub-junior section, he would sponsor the league tournament to be organised by the Ludhiana District Basketball Association.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Gill said the championship in the name of Ludhiana District Basketball Mephel Leaf League Tournament for the sub-junior and junior players would be held. Olympian Ajmer Singh, Arjuna awardee Sajjan Singh Cheema, Vipin Kumar, Kuldeep Singh Cheema Anil Punj and other international players of yesteryear obliged the youngsters by giving their autographs.

Hockey Olympians Hardeep Singh Grewal and Ramandeep Singh Grewal along with Gursharan Singh Vicky, Kamaljit Kaur, Kirandeep Kaur, Mr J P Singh, secretary, Zila Parishad, Ludhiana, Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, secretary PBA, Mr Surinder Dhir, former, Deputy Director, sports, Punjab, Mr Gianinder Singh Sandhu, District Sports Officer, Ludhiana and sports officers of the sports department, Punjab were also present.

36 probables for Katoch Shield cricket tournament

More than 50 aspirants turned up for trials conducted by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) to select probables for the forthcoming Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament for Katoch shield to be organised by the Punjab Cricket Association at different venues in the state from September 2.

The following 36 players were selected for the camp to be held at Arya College ground from August 23 at 3.30 pm.

The names of the probables are: Gagandeep Singh Toor, Gaurav Marwaha, Ankur Kakkar, Karan Goel, Luv Abhlish, Tarun Passi, Dushayant Kohli, Chinton Sehgal, Gaurav Kumar, Pankaj Kumar, Sanjay Kumar, Munish Sawal, Bharat Malhotra, Gagandeep Dhand, Harmeet Arora, Yogesh Kumar, Arun Sharma, Rajan Wassan, Maninder Singh Micky, Geetansh Khera, Sushayant Kohli, Rahul Singla, Karan Puri, Varun, Deepak Bansal, Hardeep Singh, Amrinder Singh, Salil Chaudhary, Sumit Bhalla, Jagarpreet Singh, Sunny Kumar, Ranvir Singh Gill, Rahil Nanda, Ramandeep Singh, Gurpreet Singh and Ashok Yadav.

MC demolishes illegal structure

Ludhiana, August 22
The demolishing squad of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation yesterday partially razed a structure coming up in Feroze Gandhi Market allegedly in violation of building bylaws.

The squad reached the site in the morning and started demolishing the building. The team had to stop the operation midway when the owner of the building went to the MC Commissioner and told him the violation was compoundable and he was ready to pay the fine as per the rules.

Mr Inderjit, owner of the building, said he had filled the basement of the building which was said to be a violation. Otherwise, he was making a water tank to be used in case of fire in the building.
