Q I want my son to be admitted to Military/Sainik School (especially Dholpur). Can you please advice me on the admission procedure and fee structure. When is the time for admission? — Vinit A In India, there are three types of schools that prepare students for a career in the Army. These are: the Military Schools, Sainik Schools and the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) at Dehra Dun. The five Military Schools (Chail, Ajmer, Bangalore, Belgaum and Dholpur) are run by the Defence Department, while the Sainik Schools are run by the Sainik School Society under the chairmanship of the Defence Minister. Admission to both schools is through an open exam after Class V (also after Class VIII in Sainik Schools) Age: 10-12 years on July 1, 2007. The test will be held in mid-December, followed by an interview and medical exam. Both schools follow the CBSE syllabus. Although these schools prepare the boys physically, mentally and academically for entry into the National Defence Academy and OTA/IMA/Med/Vet/Tech branches, students have to take the NDA Exam separately to seek an entry into the Indian Army. Twentyfive per cent seats are reserved for defence personnel, including ex-servicemen, 67 per cent are reserved for boys from the state in which the school is located. The prospectus, application form and old question papers can be obtained from the Principal of the nearest Sainik School. Hurry, the application deadline is: September 20, 2006. RIMC, which has a relatively higher fee structure, has a more rigorous selection procedure. Only boys who are in or have cleared Class VII between 11`BD –13 years are eligible. The prospectus contains question papers (English, Math & GK) of the previous 4 entrance exams (which are held bi-annually). For more info, log on to: www.rimc.org. Get a dose of pharma Q I am interested in doing a degree/diploma in pharmacy/pharmaceutical through correspondence. Is this possible? — Sonia Wahane A I am afraid that that there are not many options. The Distance Learning Programme Division of the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani 333031, is the only institution that offers a course in pharmacy through distance learning. However, the course offered is Master of Science (MS) in Pharmaceutical Operations & Management. It is open only for sponsored employees of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Hyderabad with integrated first degree of BITs in pharmacy or equivalent. For details, log onto: www.bits-pilani.ac.in/dlp-home. Q Is an arts background a disadvantage for selection to top MBA institutes and afterwards? — Vikrant A Despite its obsession with optimisation techniques and IT, management studies essentially remains a "social science". It deals with people, teams, and organisations, social and economic institutions. Which is why the study of modern social and economic history and social structure is compulsory at the best B-schools. Good B-schools prefer a class composed of students from multi-disciplinary disciplines. Unfortunately, a greater proportion of bright students in India head for pure sciences and technology and this is reflected in the composition of those who ace the CAT. However, in the last decade, brighter students have also begun to opt for commerce and social science streams and such students are increasingly joining MBA courses. There is no reason for students from social sciences to feel they can’t make it, or that B-schools discriminate against them. B-schools are always keen to get bright students. Full stop. Increasingly, numerical and analytical or deductive skills based on mathematical analysis are required in all fields, including social sciences and management studies. The CAT and subsequently, the MBA programme only reflect these trends. Make sure you revise your maths thoroughly and get your fundamentals at least up to Class X-level absolutely clear. Practice solving the questions till you gather sufficient speed and confidence. As a social science student you must work hard to acquire these supplementary skills to get through CAT. But on the upside, in the GD and Interview you are likely to have an edge over your pure science and engineering counterparts who generally have a limited understanding of social trends and issues. Can you please give me some relevant details about the exam? — Anita Handa A The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is held in February each year. The application deadline is mid-November. You can also apply online. It is an all-India exam conducted by the six IITs and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, on behalf of the National Coordinating Board for GATE, Department of Education, M/o HRD, GoI, for admission to postgraduate courses with MHRD Scholarship /Assistantship in engineering, technology, architecture and pharmacy at engineering colleges and institutes in the country. Some institutions specify GATE as a mandatory qualification even for admission of self-financing students. GATE-qualified candidates in engineering / technology disciplines are also eligible for the award of the Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories. Some Government Organisations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of scientists. The exam consists of a single 3-hour paper with objective-type questions relating to engineering skills and your area of specialisation. Incidentally, all GATE qualifiers (or IIT grads with GPA 8 and above) who wish to pursue teaching as a career, can opt for AICTE’s Early Faculty Induction Programme (EFIP) which offers some distinct incentives to bright young graduates pursuing PG programmes in engineering and technology, architecture or pharmacy). Sc (Textile & Designing) from a reputed university. I would be grateful if you can throw some light on career prospects available after this PG course. — Ankur Saxena A Dealing primarily with fabric, textile designing covers a wide range of disciplines such as printing, dyeing, weaving, knitting, embroidery and design development. The booming domestic and export market for garments and soft furnishing makes this a field of the future — providing ample scope for talented textile designers – now even more so after the dismantling of the quota system. India’s textile exports are growing from strength to strength – heading towards a 10 per cent share of the global market by 2010 if we concentrate on value-added made-ups and high-priced textiles home furnishing and technical textiles — a lesser known but significant segment that covers non-clothing materials used for medical, marine, military and industrial applications. This also includes geo-textiles used for construction, drainage, paving and other similar applications. China has a monopoly on this vast market at present. Since your sister has specialised in textile design, she can also work as a colour specialist in fabric design. Design studios, export houses, textile mills, textile dyeing and printing units and even fashion designers employ textile designers – on a full-time and freelance basis. The other advantage of textile design is that it enables designers to get into any field – furnishing, interiors or even graphic design – if her concepts are clear. Besides constantly experimenting, working with a designer or export house will help hone her skills and her ability to forecast trends. Right direction Q I am doing BA with geography and I am interested in GIS. Kindly tell me the qualifications required and best institutes to get admission. — Raj Kumar A Ever wondered how the pizza delivery boy makes it to your house in record time despite the dreaded traffic jams and pouring rain. Well, credit it to the Geographic Information Systems or GIS. GIS is a high-tech computer-based system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating and displaying locationally defined geographically referenced data. GIS is used for digital map making, site selection, finding the best route, solving environmental problems, exploration of natural resources, urban planning and solutions for other problems.
