She told the students about admission procedure for MBA and MIT courses affiliated to universities of Australia and USA. The Physics Department of the Khalsa College for Women organised a Physics Society whereby the students gave presentations using the multimedia on topics like application of lasers, effect of nuclear radiations on health, principles of communication, super conductivity etc here today. An on-the-spot chart making competition was also organised on the topic “Energy conservation and physics - a friend and foe.” The winners of this competition were Ramandeep and Natasha (first) ; Nancy and Raveena (second ) and at third place were Risha and Richa. Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College of Pharmacy students organised a function to welcome their juniors. The welcome function was inaugurated by the Director Principal, Mr Kuldeep Singh. Ms Harbans Kaur, an educationist, was the guest of honour. Mr Kuldeep Singh welcomed the freshers. Ms Ravinder Dang, Head of the Department also spoke. A cultural extravaganza was held which featured a welcome song, Mr and Miss Fresher competition, choreography, bhangra, group dances and a play titled ‘Shubh Karman Te Kabhun Na Taron’ was organised by the students on this occasion. To commemorate 113th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s world famous Chicago address (in the World Parliament of religions in 1893 at Chicago, USA), Swami Vivekananda study circle will organise a sarv dharam conference at Kamla Lohtia S D College, Daresi Road, on September 11. Dr A K Jain, general secretary of the organisation, said in this conference, eminent persons from Sikhism, Islam, Christianity, Jainism and Hinduism will participate. Mr Charanjit Singh Atwal, Deputy Speaker, Lok Sabha, will be the chief guest. An exhibition of portraits on the life and messages of Swami Vivekananda shall also be put up at the venue of the function. Vanamahotsava celebrated
The NSS unit of the Youth Club of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, celebrated vanamahotsava here today to create awareness among the students to clear environment. Nutrition week was celebrated at Master Tara Singh College for Women here today. A seminar was organised by Dr (Ms) Praveen Chawla, Professor, Department of Home Science. She gave an educative talk on the requirement of essential nutrients among the vulnerable group i.e. pregnant women, lactating women and children. She also stressed on the importance of supplementary foods in a balanced diet. Ms Inveet Kaur delivered a lecture on ill effects of junk food on the health of children. The Principal, Dr (Ms) Madanjit Sahota, stressed on the importance of diet in our day-to-day life. The seminar was also attended by the college president, Mr Swaran Singh and the secretary, Mr Kanwalinder Singh. The International Nutrition Week was also celebrated by the Home Science Department of Khalsa College for Women here today. In order to spread awareness among the students regarding proper nutrition, an open cooking contest was organised. Twenty-four students participated and prepared low-calories recipes. Competitions of nutritious salads and low-cal snacks were held. In salads, the Ist prize was won by Preeti Sharma; 2nd prize by Geetika and the 3rd prize was jointly won by Abha and Nidhi. In snacks, Ist prize went to Alisha, 2nd to Shruti and Preeti and the 3rd to Rohini. The Principal, Dr (Ms) Varinder Kaur Thind, stressed upon the shunning the junk food and consumption of healthy and balanced diet. |

Bethany Society community college inaugurated
Ludhiana, September 8 The Principal of the school, Sister Chantal, honoured Sister Maria
Leena, on behalf of the management, staff and parents while Saumya Jain felicitated her on behalf of the students. On this occasion, Sr Maria Leena inaugurated the Bethany Community College, the latest venture of the society based in Mangalore, to provide vocational training to those who need it the most. The college will initially provide one year courses in hotel management, bakery and confectionary, nursing care, computers, fashion designing and interior decoration. The students joining these courses will also be trained in communication skills, health and hygiene, office management and leadership. The courses, which come with essential internship and hands-on experience and placement support, are open to anyone who has completed Grade X or XII from any board. There is no age bar and fee for each course is also very nominal as the college aims at providing “the best to the least”. To ensure quality and standard in instruction and work experience, the college has signed a memorandum of understanding with leading hospitals, nursing homes, computer institutes, hotels and restaurants. The students of the school and the newly admitted students of the college presented dances and songs. Ms Satvinder presented the vote of thanks and the function concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. |

Bhupinder Singh joins as Dean
Ludhiana, September 8 Dr Singh joined the university in 1976. He has developed an outstanding broiler IBL-80 that has been released at the national level by the Variety Release Committee of the Government of India and the ICAR. The stock stood first in eight random sample tests conducted by the Government of India and was the first indigenous broiler released at the national level. The broiler project has made a pivotal role in developing poultry farming not only in Punjab but also in adjoining states of Jammy and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi by supplying the parent stocks to hatcheries in public as well as private sector. Meanwhile, Dr Baljinder Makowal, animal practitioner from Oshawa Ontario, Canada, delivered a talk on “Introduction to veterinary profession in North America” to the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the College of Veterinary Science. The lecture evoked overwhelming response. The queries of the students regarding job prospects in North America were dealt with in detail by Dr Makowal. The students took keen interest in the discussion. |

Law college holds vanamahotsava
Fatehgarh Sahib, September 8 Prof Darshan Singh of AS College, Khanna, was the guest of honour. More than 200 saplings were planted by college students, the staff and members of the managing committee. On this occasion, a seminar on “Significance of plants for mankind” was organised. Addressing the seminar, Mr Dharm Pal Gupta, ADC, elaborated the relation of plants with mankind and said plants were essential for the survival of mankind. He said a majority of our needs were met by plants, directly or indirectly. He said all saints and writers had highlighted the importance of tress. He appealed to students to plant trees in and around their homes. Prof Darshan Singh, in his address, compared the trees with humans and said metabolism also existed in trees. He said pollution is a global problem and plantation is one solution to this problem. Prof Tarshem Bahyia, director of the college, welcomed the guest. Mr Ravneet Shergill, Assistant Director, presented the vote of thanks. |

Trader convicted in cheque bounce case
Ludhiana, September 8 Out of the fine, if recovered, Rs 4,000 would be paid to the complainant as compensation. In case the accused failed to deposit the fine amount, he would have to undergo further imprisonment for two months. The orders were pronounced while deciding the complaint filed by Mr Sachdev Krishan Nahar of Shahi Mohalla, Civil Lines, Ludhiana. It was submitted by the complainant that the accused had taken a loan from him. In order to discharge the legally enforceable liability, the accused issued a cheque for Rs 70,000. He was assured that the cheque would be honoured on its presentation. But, the cheque was dishonoured by the banker of the accused with the remarks “insufficient funds”. A legal notice was served upon the accused, but, in spite of that notice, he failed to make the payment of the cheque amount. However, the accused pleaded
innocence. It was submitted by him that he did not take any loan. Actually, he had placed an order to the complainant to supply 120 sets of track suits. But, the goods supplied were of inferior quality. He had issued two cheques to the complainant. |
