1993 blasts: verdict today

Mumbai, September 11
Ahead of the verdict tomorrow in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case a security drill was held today at the designated TADA court in the city’s high security Arthur Road Jail.

Although the order in one of the longest trials in Indian judiciary may not be fully pronounced tomorrow, the court may begin the process of dictating it, sources in the TADA court headed by Mr P.D. Kode said.

With extradited gangster Abu Salem having withdrawn on Friday his petition from the Supreme Court, challenging his separate trial in the case, the last hurdle in the way of the order has been cleared.

The apex court heard Salem’s plea last week and fixed the next hearing on September 18. But Salem withdrew the petition, thus clearing the way for TADA court to start pronouncing the judgement tomorrow.

A series of 13 bomb explosions had rocked Mumbai on March 12, 1993, in which 257 people were killed over 700 injured and property worth crores of rupees was destroyed.

More than 100 cops, including officers, besides intelligence officials participated in the security rehearsal today. Top police and intelligence officials were present on the occasion.

Police sources said more than 500 policemen besides personnel of State Reserve Police (SRP) will be deployed inside and outside the TADA court tomorrow. — UNI
