Kisan Mela begins at Patiala today

Ludhiana, September 18
Punjab Agricultural University is organising a regional Kisan Mela at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nabha road, Patiala, on September 19. Eminent floriculturist Avtar Singh Dhindsa will inaugurate the mela.

This was stated today by the Director of Extension Education, Dr S.S. Gill. The theme of the mela will be “Save water, save Punjab”. The main mela on the PAU campus will be held on September 21 and 22, while the regional mela at Bathinda will be organised on September 29.

Capt Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister, will inaugurate the mela in Ludhiana. Mr Jagmohan Singh Kang, Minister for Animal Husbandry, will be the guest of honour.

During the mela, Punjab Virasat Mela will be organised in collaboration with the Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department and North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala.

RIMT welcomes freshers

Mandi Gobindgarh, September 18
The RIMT-Institute of Management and Computer Technology and the Gobindgarh Institute of Management and Technology jointly organised a freshers party ‘Fusion ’06’ to welcome 500 newcomers to the MBA, MCA, BBA, BCA, PGDCA and MSc programmes.

The programme was inaugurated by the Chairman of RIMT group of educational institutes Hukam Chand Bansal. In his address, he welcomed the students to the RIMT fraternity and assured all resources for their development.

In his welcome speech, Dr B.S. Bhatia, the Director of the Institute, asked the students to utilize their potential to the best possible extent and elaborated on various facilities available to them.

Ms Jaspreet Talwar, Deputy Commissioner of Fatehgarh Sahib district, was the chief guest on the occasion. She appreciated the efforts of the RIMT group for providing quality professional institutes in the region.

Students presented a cultural programme on the occasion. Various foot-tapping group dances were presented by Barminder, Avjot and group, Sham Sunder and group, Gurveen and Group, Manjeet and Group, Tamnna and Inderpreet. Subir Singh, Nisha, Sunaxi, Nischal, Nebhraj presented solo songs.

Mayank Bajaj presented a mimicry item while Ankur and Piyoush gave a song and guitar performance. Kanika performed a classical dance item and Zoheib Sheikh presented a reverse song. News reading in different languages by Zoheib Sheikh produced many hilarious moments.

Ms Sheenam Puri of MBA and Mr Kulvinder Singh of MBA were chosen as Ms Fresher and Mr Fresher, respectively. The titles of Ms Personality and Mr Personality went to Rashi Khunger of MBA and Gurnoor Singh Shekhon of BBA, respectively. Rajinder Jhajj, Jasbir Dhiman and Bhavan were the judges.

The show was organised under the supervision of faculty-in-charge Prof Gurvinder Bakshi. The programme was compered by Sachin Loomba, Simaljeet, Simranpreet, Avi and Sharat.

Play on female foeticide enacted

The Peoples Theatre, in its campaign against social evils, enacted a play “Dard Anjamian Dhian Dey” on female foeticide at Government Secondary School here yesterday.

The play has been written and directed by Master Nirbhai Singh Dhaliwal

Mr Paviter Singh, MD, Green Land Hotel, was the chief guest of the function and social worker Harmesh Singh inaugurated the play.

The play is about a farmer who refuses to buy some land at a cheap rate as he fears that ghosts might be haunting the place. The land under consideration was a cremation ground in the past.

But, the task of arranging dowry for the female child makes him think of turning his house into a grave for the female child.

The cast of the play included Nirbhai Singh, Balbir Singh Kapoor, Jagjit Singh Jagga, Gurjeet Singh Baronga, Rashpal Singh Jaria and Rajinder Kaur.

Addressing the gathering, playwright Gursharn Singh said, “With an aim to enrich theatre in Malwa region, a series of plays will be organised at district headquarters.”

The Director of the film, ‘Pagdi Sambhal Jatta’, Mr Iqbal Raju made an appearance on stage. Former council chief Tajwant Singh, BJP district vice-president Rajpal Garg, councilors Harpal Singh, Rupal and Jatinder Singh were present on the occasion.

The play was organised by Child Development and Project Officer Satish Kumar. Mr Bhagwan Singh, Superintendent, Maghi Memorial College was the stage secretary.
