Cracker-sellers ignoring safety norms

Several markets in and around the city are virtually sitting on a firebomb with cracker-sellers blowing safety norms to pieces, blatantly. In the absence of timely action against these violators by the Chandigarh Police and other authorities concerned, the possible occurrence of a disaster may not be a distant reality.

J&K sex scandal: orders on bail pleas on Oct 9

Chandigarh, October 3
After hearing arguments daylong by the defence and prosecution in the infamous Jammu and Kashmir sex scandal, the District and Sessions Judge, Mr BS Mehndiratta, today fixed October 9 for pronouncing orders on the bail pleas of 13 accused in the case.

Zirakpur’s municipal limits set to expand
Zirakpur, October 3
The municipal limits of Zirakpur, township of apartments and shopping
malls, are set to expand with the inclusion of two more villages—Nabha and Singhpura.
In a recent notification issued under Section 5 of the Punjab Municipal Act
1911, the Punjab Government has expressed its intention to include the area in
the municipal limits for the “development of the area in a planned manner”.

After fighting for life in different bus queue shelters in the city for the past
over five years an accident victim, Sudesh Kumar Sharma, died here today. He was
declared ‘‘brought dead’’ to the emergency of Government Medical College
and Hospital, Sector 32.

Youths allege police high-handedness

Chandigarh, October 3
Two city-based youths alleged that they, along with their acquaintance from Delhi, were beaten up in the Sector 36 police station by a Sub-Inspector of the local police and two Delhi Police cops.
The Delhi Police has reportedly come to the city in connection with the
abduction case of a minor girl, who was allegedly kept at the Sector 35
residence of the youths.
Three victims of alleged police high-handedness show their injury marks in Sector 17 on Tuesday.

Punjab police Sub-Inspector Atul Soni, a city resident, has been selected for the United Nations peace-keeping mission in Kosovo.
He is among eight officers of the Punjab police who have been selected for the
mission.
Sarpanch seeks probe into land deal

The Sarpanch of Bhankharpur village, Mr Joginder Singh, today demanded a high-level probe into the sale of 26 kanal shamlat land by certain persons to a Delhi-based real estate company allegedly in connivance with revenue officials.
