Rashid takes 3-stroke lead

Delhi’s Rashid Khan grabbed the solitary lead in Category A, striking an opening round of three under 69, in the Sunfeast Chandigarh Junior and Sub-Junior Golf Championship, which teed off at the par-72 Chandigarh Golf Club here today.

The trio of Rahul Bakshi, Amanjyot Singh and Abhinav Lohan shared the second place at level par 72 while Abhijeet Chadha was placed fifth with two over 74.

In Category B, Raghav Bhandari shot an opening round of three over 75 to take a one-stroke lead from Anish Gupta, who carded four over 76, with Chikka Rangappa third at six over 78.

In category C, Ashbeer Saini carded an opening round of eight over 80 to take the lead, followed by Ankur Chadha on nine over 81 and Tarundeep Chadha on 10 over 82.

Rashid had a great day as he fired four birdies, two each on the front nine and back nine.

He started with consecutive birdies on the second and third to make the turn at two-under.

On his return leg, he dropped a shot on the 11th, but bounced back with birdies on the 15th and 18th to lead.

“There was no pressure and I played my natural game. I missed an easy putt on the 11th, but otherwise, things could have been better”, said Rashid.

Rahul had birdies on the fifth, eighth and 13th holes, but dropped shots on the fourth, seventh and 10th.

Amanjyot’s round witnessed birdies on the 10th, 13th, 14th and 18th, but he dropped shots on the first, third, 15th and 17th holes.

Subeer’s knock helps MCA win

A 65-run partnership for the third wicket between Subeer Hayer (68 not out, 7x4s) and Mayank Sood (26, 5x4s) and accurate bowling by Mayank Sood (3 for 20, Mayank Munjal 3 for 3) helped the Mohali Cricket Association beat St Stephen’s School, Togan, by 78 runs in the Inter-School Four-Team Cricket League for U-13, being organised by DP Azad Cricket Academy at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, here today.

The MCA made 165 for 4 in the allotted 25 overs. Subeer Hayer displayed his batting strength by hitting an unbeaten 68 with the help of four fours. Mayank’s 26 contained five fours. Karan Punj got two wickets for 20 runs.

In reply, St Stephen’s School, Togan, were bundled out for 87 in 20.2 overs, Nipun Sood made an unbeaten 30, with the help of two fours and one six. Mayank Munjal claimed three wickets for 3 runs.

Scores:

MCA: 165 for 4 in 25 overs (Subeer Hayer 68 n.o, Mayank Sood 26, Mayank Munjal 26, Karam Punj 2 for 20).

St Stephen’s, Togan: 87 in 22.2 overs (Manjot Singh 14, Nipun Sood 30 not out, Mayank Sood 3 for 20, Mayank Munjal 3 for 3).

Hockey titles

Chandigarh, October 3
DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, claimed the boys’ U-19 and U-14 titles in the North Zone CBSE Hockey Tournament, organised by Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, on the Panjab University campus here today.

In the U-19 final, DAVSSS-8 beat Ganga International Public School 5-3. DAVSSS-8 scored through Gagandeep Singh, Shamsher Singh, Navpreet Sngh, Ashish Kumar and Harpreet Singh (one each). Manish scored two goals, while Roop scored one goal for Ganga International.

Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, routed St Soldier’s School 9-0 for the third place. Samandeep Singh, Gaurav Gambhir, Satnam Singh, Naveen Kumar, Sidharath, Surinder, Gurinder, Rahul and Ajay scored one goal each for the winners.

Softball meet

Chandigarh, October 3
Government High School, Sector 11, registered a convincing win against GSSS-27 team in under-17 category 11-6 in the Inter -School Softball tournament, held at GMSSS-21 here today. In the second match in the same category, GHS-46 beat GMHS-12 in a one- sided affair 13-3.

Netball tourney on Oct 7, 8

Chandigarh, October 3
The Senior State Netball championship will be held at Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, on October 7 and 8.

During the meet, the Chandigarh boys and girls teams will be selected, which will participate in the junior National Netball championship, to be held at Raipur in Chhattisgarh in November.
