103 units of blood collected

Ludhiana, October 3
As many as 103 persons donated blood at a blood donation camp organised by the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) to mark National Voluntary Blood Donation Day at Rampura Phul yesterday.

Stating this here today, Dr Amarjit Kaur, Head of Transfusion Medicine at the DMCH, expressed her satisfaction at the fact that all donors were highly motivated and had an exemplary enthusiasm. Focusing on the significance of voluntary blood donation, she said the movement aimed at creating awareness for safe blood and encouraging regular voluntary blood donors.

Dr Amarjit Kaur said if NGOs, educational institutions and other social and religious bodies adopted voluntary blood donation as their aim, it would be possible to enlist the needed one per cent of population in the country as regular blood donors.

Locals hail posting of 3 docs

Machhiwara, October 3
People of the town and its adjoining villages have heaved a sigh of relief with the state government posting an MD and two MS doctors at the local PHU.

Hailing the Health Department’s decision, representatives of various social organisations welcomed Dr Balbir Singh, a renowned surgeon, and Dr Sanjay Kapoor, a famous physician, who joined the PHU recently.

Another surgeon, Dr Ajay Paul Singh, is likely to join shortly. With the arrival of the two doctors, the number of outdoor patients visiting the PHU has increased considerably.

Representatives of social bodies have urged the Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, not to assign duties of SMO to any of these doctors so that they could focus on examining patients without the burden of paper work. OC

Punjab, TN circles score emphatic wins

Ludhiana, October 3
The hosts Punjab circle began their campaign in a whirlwind style thrashing the Jharkhand circle 19-0 on the opening day of the 20th All-India Postal Hockey Tournament at the Prithipal Singh Memorial Astro Turf Stadium of Punjab Agricultural University here today. The Punjab circle romped home victorious without being challenged.

In the second match, the Tamil Nadu circle proved too good for their rivals from the Uttar Pradesh circle whom they drubbed 7-0. Ms Manjula Prashar, Chief Postmaster General, Punjab and Chandigarh, inaugurated the tournament in which teams from six circles- Punjab, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh are taking part.

Addressing the participants, Ms Prashar emphasised the significance of sports. She exhorted the players to display their best during the course of this five-day tournament.

Mr M.L. Kalia, Director, Postal Services Headquarters, extended a warm welcome to the chief guest and the participating teams. Ms Sukhwinder Kaur, Director, Postal Services (R), read out the vote of thanks.

Basketball tourney from Oct 12

Ludhiana, October 3
The Ludhiana District Basketball Association will organise the district basketball championship for junior boys and girls as well as men and women here at the Guru Nanak Stadium from October 12 to 14, according to Mr Gurpreet Singh, president, District Basketball Association, Ludhiana.

Entries may be sent by October 10 to Mr Balkar Singh Brar or Mr Vijay Kumar Chopra, joint secretary and vice-president of the association, respectively.
