2 murder convicts to be hanged on October 16

Convicted of murder, Jaj Singh and Gurwail Singh both residents of Bhitewad village (Amritsar), will be hanged to death in the high-security Central Jail, here on October 16, four days before the hanging of Mohammed Afzal, the man sentenced to death for attacking Parliament in 2001.

Earlier, Ajmer Singh, also a murder convict was hanged to death in this jail, 23 years ago (On October 20, 1983).

Death sentence of both convicts has been confirmed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. While warrant of execution has been fixed by the Sessions Court Amritsar an FIR No. 91 dated August 21, 2000 was registered against them at the police station Rajasansi. The Fast-Track Court had confirmed the sentence of hanging.

On August 21, 2000 Sharm Singh, grandfather of the accused had lodged an FIR, accusing Jaj Singh and Gurwail Singh for killing Kulwant Singh (son of Sharm Singh), his wife Sarbjit Kaur, Gurwinder Singh and Davinder Singh - grandsons while they were taking food on October 20. They killed them due to a property dispute.

Mr Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, DIG, Central Jail confirmed the date of hanging on October 16. He, however, said that the Jail authorities had filed an appeal petition in the Supreme Court of India by providing free legal aid on humanitarian ground.

Meanwhile, preparation for executing the hanging are being made. The jail authorities are already in possession of ‘special rope’ to be used for hanging for the execution of the order.

Four more murder convicts, lodged in this jail, including Pyara Singh Nihang are awaiting execution of death sentence. While their death sentence has been confirmed by Punjab and Haryana High Court, but their appeal has been pending before the Supreme Court.

The hangman is being arranged from Amritsar itself even as the person who had carried out the hanging of Ajmer Singh has retired. The hanging would take place in the presence of a magistrate, government doctors and officials concerned. However, family members of the convicted persons would remain present in the jail premises for receiving bodies after a post mortem examination.
