Crusader for organ donation to visit city on
October 27
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, October 7
Mr Reg Green from America will visit the city on October 27 and 28 to deliver a talk on organ donation to coincide with the IX All-India Transplant Games and SAARC Transplant Olympics to be held at the Guru Nanak Dev Stadium here.

Mr Green, a US resident, has been dedicated to furthering the noble cause of organ and tissue donation since 1994 when his seven-year-old son, Nicholas, was killed by highway robbers in Italy while they were vacationing. Mr Green and his wife, Maggie, decided to donate their son’s organs and corneas to seven Italians waiting for transplants. Having arrived at the decision (to donate their son’s organs), the parents of the child spoke openly to the media, with no bitterness about their loss.

Giving this information, Dr B.S. Aulakh, urologist and Head of Transplant Unit at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, who is the chief-organiser of the games, said in Italy Nicholas became a national hero. He has had streets, parks and schools named after him. Scholarships to help needy or talented children were set up all over the world in his memory. Nicholas’s body was flown in the Italian President’s military plane, and in Rome he was posthumously honoured with a gold medal.

Said Dr Aulakh, “The media played a great role in carrying around the globe the story of the child’s tragic death and how the donation of his organs gave seven persons in Italy the chance to lead a full life. Organ donations in Italy have tripled after this unique, albeit tragic, incident and thousands of people are alive who would otherwise have died. The world’s response to the Green’s personal tragedy is known as ‘the Nicholas effect’ and the Bell Memorial, inspired by Nicholas’s death, is also built up in Bodega Bay.”

The Green family has also set up the Nicholas Green Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation dedicated to furthering the cause of organ donation around the world. It is spreading information to increase awareness of the shortage of donors around the world, while also producing videos and helping organise special events. The foundation has made a beautiful 14-minute video about the life and death of the child called ‘The Nicholas Effect’.

According to Dr Aulakh, “The crusader for the cause of organ and tissue donation (Mr Green) travels around the world-giving speeches to people from different walks of life at schools and colleges, professional conferences, hospitals and community clubs.” He asserted that presence of Mr Reg Green in the ensuing sports event in the city would definitely motivate the public to come forward and participate in organ donation.

The patients, at regular health-check up camps, are also encouraged to share their own experiences with others who have gone through this treatment. “This is a problem which need to be addressed in our society and we are willing to help any voluntary body in training their personnel and extend help to them who are interested in helping cancer patients said Dr Sekhon.
