‘Controversial’ law college opens admissions
Shivani Bhakoo

Ludhiana, October 17
Guru Nanak College of Law, Malerkotla Road, near Dehlon here, which was allegedly responsible for ruining the career of 16 law students, has invited applications from students for a five-year BA LLB course this time.

The willing students have been asked to contact the college with attested copies of testimonials and three passport-size photographs till October 19. The fee mentioned in the pamphlets is Rs 35,000 per annum, which have been distributed with various newspapers recently.

The college claims to be affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh, recognised by the Punjab Government and approved by the Bar Council of India. But on September 20, the same college had asked its 16 students, who had attended several lectures, to leave the institute on the pretext that the affiliation process had not been completed and the ongoing session had to be discontinued.

Ludhiana Tribune had published the story of the students’ plight the same day.

This correspondent, posing to be a student willing to get admission to the same college, contacted one of the trustees Dr Iqbal Walia on a mobile number (9356660561) given in the pamphlet.

After asking her percentage and age, she was told that she could get admission easily. But when Dr Walia was asked to tell about the future of the 16 law students who were shown the door on September 20, he said, “We never admitted them and I do not know about that incident.”

Incidentally, Ludhiana Tribune has the copies of the admission receipts of the students.

He claimed that the college had taken permission to conduct the classes for a five-year BA LLB course but for a three-year course, they were still waiting for the state government’s nod.

“It is not easy to get the government’s clearance. We have to grease the palms of several officers in the department. That course will take time to start,” he said.

Ludhiana Tribune spoke to the Dean, Colleges, Mr B.D. Budhiraja, to know the exact situation. He said in the last Senate meeting (in mid September), they had received several complaints against the college management.

“By that time, they were not able to get the approval of the Bar Council of India, which clearly meant that they were not allowed to commence the classes. I cannot comment on whether they have been given approval by the Bar Council or not,” he said.
