PGI poll: Bhardwaj group makes clean sweep

Chandigarh, November 3
The Sat Pal Bhardwaj group of the PGI Employees Union made a clean sweep in the bi-annual elections held, here today.

A constant for the post of president, Mr Sunil Dutt Sharma, won the elections in a triangular contest by defeating rivals Mr Surinder Gupta and Mr Dilbagh Singh Jarial.

Mr Sharma got the highest votes (787) polled in his favour, while Mr Gupta and Mr Singh could get only 540 and 267 votes, respectively.

Mr Krishan Chand Gupta was elected senior vice-president by defeating his opponents Randhir Singh Kumbra and Gurmit Singh with a margin of 183 and 466 votes respectively.

Defeating Mr Rajinder Kumar and Mr Rajiv Avasthi with a huge margin Mr Mohinder Singh won the post of vice-president.

Mr K.K.Yadav won the post of general secretary by defeating Mr Rajinder Pal Singh and Mr Kundan Lal, while Mr Rajesh Saxena won the post of secretary by defeating Mr Anil Kumar. Mr Arvind Kumar, Mr Bhupinder Singh Rawat and Mr Ravinder Saini, won the posts of organising , propaganda secretary and treasurer respectively.

Mr Ashwani Munjal, chairman of the negotiation committee, informed that 1,706 members of the union exercised their franchise in the election.

‘Tobacco major cause of cancer in country’

The cancer is a disease of life style and advancing age, therefore, incidence and number of different cancers is increasing alarmingly.

Almost 34 per cent of cancers occur because of tobacco use in the form of smoking and chewing in the country compared to only 15 per cent in the western countries, claims Dr S.C. Sharma, Head of the Department of Radiotherapy, PGI.

Dr Sharma was speaking during a cancer awareness-and-control programme organised by the Radiotherapy Department, PGI, for the students of DAV College, Sector 10, today.

He revealed that 48 per cent of the cancer cases among males were related to tobacco, against 20 per cent cases among women. Cancer of mouth, lung, larynx and oesophagus were the common cancers caused by the tobacco use.

Kalyani, Mayank romp home in tennis tourney

Kalyani of Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, and Mayank Kapoor of DAV Public School, Sector 8, won cadet girls and boys (under 12 years) titles, respectively, in the ongoing 19th Chandigarh State Table Tennis Championship held at the Table Tennis Hall, Sector 23, here, today.

In the cadet girls’ singles quarterfinal round, Rajeshwari gave a straight set defeat to Divya Nagal 11-7, 11-8, 12-10 but lost to Kalyani of MM-21 (4-11, 4-11, 12-14).

In the final, Kalyani had no difficulty in defeating her teammate Shakshi at the set score of 3-1 (11-7,11-6,8-11,11-5).

In cadet boys’ category, Mayank Kapoor easily overpowered Aditya Pandey of Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, to win the titles at the set score of 3-1 (11-7,11-7,9-11,11-5)

In the Men Team Championship, the Coaching Centre, Sector 23, secured the first position by winning two matches out of three played in the semifinal league.

The team of the Reserve Bank of India secured the second position and the Chandigarh Table Tennis Club secured the third position.

In the women’s section, the Chandigarh Table Tennis Club secured the first position whereas the Coaching Centre-23 and Players Table Tennis Club secured the second and third position, respectively.

SD-32, DAV school to play basketball tourney finals

The SD-32 team and the DAV Senior Secondary School (DAV SSS), Sector 8 team, ensured their birth in the finals of the Inter-School U-19 Basketball Championship (boys), underway at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector - 33, here.

In the u-19 semifinal: SD beat DAV-15 (75-44) while DAV SSS-8 beat GMSSS 33 (46-31).

U-17 (semifinal): St. Xavier, 44 b G.M.S.S.S. 33 (46-17) St. Stephen beat Ajit Karam Singh International (44-28) Volleyball (boys) u-14 : In the Boys volleyball meet held at Government Model High School- 26, GMHS (PL)-26 emerged winner.

The results are as follows:

U -14 : 1 G.M.H.S.(PL)26, 2 GMSSS-16, 3 G.H.S. Kaimbwala; U- 17:G.M.H.S. 26 (PL) beat DAV- 8 by 25-20, 25-18, 25-22;

U-19: G.M.S.S.S.-23 beat G.M.S.S.S. 22A, score: 25-12, 25-8; Shivalik Public School beat DAV-15.

Plan expenditure reviewed at meeting

Chandigarh, November 3
A senior officers conference was held today under the Chairmanship of Adviser to the Administrator Lalit Sharma to review the progress of expenditure, recoveries, revenue receipts and audit paras up to the period ending September 30.

The Finance Secretary, Mr S.K. Sandhu, presented the review report and stated that the Plan expenditure up to September 2006 was Rs 117.05 crore against the budget allocation of Rs 216.66 crore, which is 54 per cent against 38 per cent during the corresponding period last year.

He said the Non- Plan expenditure was Rs 566.64 crore against the allocation of Rs 1,107.15 crore, which comes to be 51 per cent against 49 per cent during the corresponding period last year.

The achievements of the targets of the revenue receipts up to September was Rs 626.93 crore against the target of Rs 1,090.80 crore, which is 57 per cent against 45 per cent during the corresponding period last year. The realisation under sales tax is Rs 282.09 crore against the target of Rs 450 crore, showing 63 per cent achievement against 42 per cent during corresponding period last year.

The realisation under power sector was Rs 185.86 crore against the target of Rs 332 crore, which is 56 per cent against 49 per cent during the corresponding period last year. The performance up to September under all areas was satisfactory as it was above the norm of 50 per cent up to September.

Mr Sandhu has instructed the head of departments whose expenditure was less than 50 per cent up to September to boost development activities in the city.
