2 city students make it to Horlicks finale

Ludhiana, November 6
"We have prepared ourselves for all the five rounds that will be held in Bangalore to test our personalities for Horlicks Whiz Kid - 2006. We have done our best and prepared well for the past four months. But since 50 finalists from 25 cities would be participating in the finals round of Horlicks Whiz Kid 2006, we are a little worried," said Sidhant Srivastava a student of 10+2 (Non-Medical) of the Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School and Prerna Verma, a student of Class XI of the BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School.

Both have qualified for the final round that starts on November 8 and would conclude on November 11 at Ambedkar Bhawan in Bangalore. These two students will be joined by two students from Chandigarh.

Horlicks Whiz Kid Quiz had reached out to four million students and the team that wins out of 50 students will get an opportunity to visit Philippines on an education cultural exchange.

Talking to the Ludhiana Tribune, Sidhant said besides written test, and interview round, we had to showcase some special talent. My special talent is oratorial skill. I can impress people with my speech."

Prerna on the other hand is a young budding poet. For cultural representation round, both of them will present bhangra.

They said this type of competition gave students ample opportunities to expand their apabilities. There would be five rounds and in the first round, they would present a 40-page project followed by the talent round, cultural representation, speaking skill round , group discussion quiz round and finally the judges question round.

“We have been preparing from August 5 when we were short-listed," they said. We wish good luck to our city students.

Sports week kicked off at Sacred Heart

Ludhiana, November 6
The Sacred Heart Higher Secondary Convent School, Urban Estate, Sector 39, Ludhiana, celebrated the inauguration of the sports and cultural week today.

The annual sports meet was formally declared open after the flag-hoisting, march-past and oath-taking ceremonies. The Director of the school, Rev Dr Hormise Nirmal Raj, presided over the function and asked students to play with sportsmanship and positive attitude.

Other than sports events, a short cultural programme, including Himachali dance, rain dance and aerobics, was also held to mark the occasion,

The Principal, Rev Sr Flowerlet, also addressed the students stressing on the qualities of good leaders who guide, lead and inspire others.

Health camp

A two day health awareness camp was organised at the Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School on November 4 and 5. Dr Rajoo Chhina, a leading gastroenterologist of the city, talked about various preventable diseases and advised everyone to be a part of health education system. Dr Rajeev Gupta, a well-known psychatrist, discussed fears of failure and the ways to overcome them.

IBM selects four students

Ludhiana, November 6
Four students of the Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, have been selected for the IBM-ACE 2007 programme. The students are Sania Aggarwal (BCA III), Nishi Arya (BCA III), Jingle John (BCA III) and Swati Jindal (BSC III).

The interviews were conducted by the IBM in Chandigarh on November 4 in which nearly 600 students from 20 colleges participated.

After completing their graduation, the girls will join the IBM as software development executives. They will also be enrolled for a master’s degree in software engineering and the fee will be sponsored by the IBM.

Youth festival on Nov 15

Ludhiana, November 6
Dr Charan Kamal Singh of the Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle said today that an inter-school youth festival would be held at Gurdwara Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib, Sidhwan Kalan, on November 15. The study circle, Ludhiana Zone, is organising the festival.

Inter-school competitions would be held to involve the students in extra-curricular activities. Principal Satinder Kaur will be the chief guest at the function. Mr Satnam Singh Sallopuri, Director, Youth Services, said the festival is being sponsored by Mr Sohan Singh of the USA and more that 50 local schools would participate. — OC
