“Cong misused govt machinery”
: Mr Tikshan Sud, leader of the BJP legislative group in the state Assembly, alleged on Wednesday that the Congress had misused government money and machinery for its rally at Ludhiana. He further alleged that Deputy Commissioners, along with District Transport Officers, forcibly detained buses of private transporters and handed them over to Congress leaders for transporting people to Ludhiana. Officers of the Revenue and Transport Departments had been assigned duties to gather crowds, he alleged.

Traffic blocked
: On a call by the All-India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha to launch a statewide stir, hundreds of workers of the Pendu Mazdoor Union and the Kirti Kisan Union on Thursday held a dharna and blocked the Ludhiana- Ferozepur GT Road near the local Civil Hospital disrupting the movement of vehicular traffic from 12 noon to 2 pm. The dharna was held in support of their demand for the immediate release of the farmers who were languishing in jail for their struggle against the acquisition of land by Trident Group in Dhaula, Chhanna and Sanghera villages in Barnala district. They also sought the dismissal of the alleged land acquisition notice. Mr Hardev Singh Sandhu, president of the All-India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha, lambasted the state government for its anti-farmer policies. Prominent among others present were Sukhdev Singh Manuke, Avtar Singh Rasulpur, Surinder Singh, Inderjit Singh Dhaliwal and Nirbhai Singh Dhudike.

Malerkotla
Thief beaten to death
: An alleged thief was beaten to death by some unknown persons at Mohalla Bhumsi in the early hours on Wednesday. Balkar Singh, son of Mr Satbir Singh, a resident of Haider Nagar, was allegedly caught when he was scaling the wall of a house with the intention to steal in Mohalla Bhumsi here. Some unknown persons, who caught him, started beating him. He was injured seriously and was admitted to the local Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The police has registered a case under Sections 457, 380 and 511 of the IPC against unknown persons.
