Rare honour for PAU don

The PAU Dean, Postgraduate Studies, Dr S.S.Chahal, is president-elect (2007-09) of the Indian Phytopathological Society (IPS). The society itself has created a history of sorts. For the first time since its inception in 1947, a plant pathologist has been "unanimously" elected president without a formal election. The society has over 2,000 members. It is the 
second largest body of plant pathologists next only to the American Phytopathological Society.

Dr Chahal has already served as president of the Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology (2001) and the Indian Society of Plant Pathologists (2004).Since his joining PAU as Assistant Plant Pathologist in 1975, he has held key posts. He has distinguished himself for carrying out basic and applied research in the fields of disease resistance, epidemiology risk analysis, disease cycle and management of serious diseases of cereals and sunflower.

He has won many awards and distinctions, including the PAU Meritorious Teachers' Award in 1998.Widely travelled all over the world, he has contributed to various research journals and attended 77 national and 12 international scientific conferences.

Gold medals for students

The PAU Academic Council has decided to shift the Department of Business Management to College of Agriculture with immediate effect. The department offers two MBA programmes--Master of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration-Agri Business.

The council also approved institution of Dr Charanjit Kaur Hira Memorial Merit Fellowship in the College of Home Science.

The fellowship will be awarded on merit basis to one student each of M.Sc. (Food and Nutrition) Ist year and 2nd year. The amount of fellowship will be Rs.1,300 per month for each student.

This fellowship has been sponsored by PAU's Additional Director of Research (Agriculture), Dr.G.S.Hira, in the memory of his wife. He has deposited Rs 5 lakh for the institution of this fellowship.

PAU Vice-Chancellor K.S. Aulakh presided over the meeting. According to the Registrar, Dr V.K. Sharma, the council also approved the award of following gold medals to meritorious students:

Gold medal: Ruhi Gandhi, B.Sc. Hons (Agri); Jasjeet Kaur, B.Tech.(Agril. Engg.)-2006, and Ruchu Katyal, B.Sc.Hons(Home Science),2005.

ASPEE medal: Navneet Kaur, B.Sc. Hons (Agri) in the elective plant protection.

S.S. Labh Singh Medal- 2006: To Rattandeep Kaur Bhamra, B.Sc.Hons. (Agri.) in elective Agronomy.

Ram Dhan Singh Medal-2006: Ruhi Gandhi, B.Sc. Hons (Agri.) in elective Plant Breeding and Genetics.

Dr Sukhdyal Nijahawan Medal-2006:Sumeet Arneja, B.Sc. Hons (Agri.) in elective Soil Science.

These medals will be awarded at the time of convocations of the respective colleges.

Heritage festival depicting rural life begins

Ludhiana, November 29
The Khalsa College for Women beckoned one and all to 'Mela Panj Daryawan Da' here today to bring the younger generation close to the cultural traditions of Punjab. The two-day cultural fair, organised by the Department of Punjabi, was inaugurated by Ms Harbans Kaur Dullo, an MLA and Parliamentary Secretary.

Mr Surinder Dawar also graced the occasion. The guests were accorded a ritualistic welcome and were accompanied to the mela ground by members of the college managing committee, Dr Varinder Kaur Thind, Principal, staff members and students.

The college presented a rural look with the students dressed in their bright traditional Punjabi outfits. The feast to the eyes was the ‘pind’, an innovative attempt to recreate Punjabi culture and heritage. The rural Punjabi scene was brought alive with the enactment of various scenes like a cluster of girls drawing water from ‘Tootan Wala Khu’, hawkers selling vegetables, ‘mutiyarna’ engaged in various household activities like milk-churning, saag-cutting, kalire and sehra-making and embroidery.

Ms Dullo in her address fondly recalled her days spent in the college as a student. She applauded the effort to preserve and popularise the rich Punjabi heritage and culture.

She inspired the students to do everything wholeheartedly and achieve success in life.

Ludhiana, November 29
Students of DAV Public School organised a jan chetna rally under the aegis of the Arya Pradeshik Pratinidhi Upsabha Punjab here today. The aim of the rally was to create awareness about social evils like corruption, female foeticide and caste system, said Mr R.R. Bhall, honorary treasurer of the DAV Managing Committee, New Delhi.

The rally started at 11 am from the school and passed through Ferozepur Road, Aarti Chowk, Ghumar Mandi, Fountain Chowk, College Road and Rose Garden. It culminated on the school campus.

The students carried placards condemning the social evils.

Students lectured on epilepsy

Dr Yashpal Singh, Head of Department of Neurology, CMCH, gave a lecture on epilepsy to the students of Jain Public Senior Secondary School here on Tuesday. He talked about the various aspects of epilepsy i.e.., why it happens, types of epilepsy, symptoms of seizure and the different myths associated with it. He told teachers that an epileptic child should always be treated as normal. Epilepsy did not affect the memory or intelligence of a child.

KVM students excel

Twelve students of Kundan Vidya Mandir (KVM) participated in a news reading contest held in a local school to mark Newspaper Day on Wednesday. While Rajul and Lokesh bagged the second prize in English news reading, Tasneen and Isha bagged the second prize in Hindi news reading.

Song contest

The KG section of Kundan Vidya Mandir organised an action song competition for tiny tots. The participants sung without hesitation.

The results are as follows:

LKG: Aditya Kathpal I, Esha Jain II, Vidhi Jain III;

UKG: Garima Gupta I, Chetna Nagpal II, Vandita Jain III. Kunwar (LKG) and Abhjyot (UKG) were given consolation prizes.

Cadets vow to fight dowry menace on NCC Day

NCC cadets celebrated NCC Day with fervour and zeal at Government College for Women today. The celebrations were held under the command of Col S.S.Deol of 3Pb Girls Bn. The day began with an anti-dowry pledge, followed by a rally by cadets on the issue.

Ms Prabhjot Kaur, Principal of the college, and Ms Narinder Sekhon flagged off the rally. Painting and essay writing competitions were also held on the occasion.

Capt Ms Narinder Kaur, NCC in charge of the college, motivated the cadets to fight against the social evil of dowry. The Principal congratulated the cadets for organising such activities. The winners of the essay and painting competitions were Ritu Chauhan, Jaspreet Kaur, Hardeep Kaur, Ginakshi, Jaswinder and Gurmeet Kaur.

Seminar on speech power

The ISTE Student Chapter of the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology, under the aegis of the Ludhiana Management Association, organised a seminar on ‘speech power’ here today. The resource person was Prof R.K. Chopra of the Chopra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad. The seminar was attended by 300 MBA students of various management colleges of Ludhiana.

The speaker gave a lucid and vivid presentation on speech power and stressed the importance of effective public speaking and oral communication. He said the speaker need to dress up properly for the occasion and emphasised on the matter and manner of presentation. The matter, the subject of speech, should be interesting and beneficial to the audience. It should be straight, simple and to the point. In the manner context, the speaker emphasised that “how you say” something was more important than “what you say”.

He informed the audience about the problems of listeners -- problem of a wandering mind and language and judgemental hearing. The speaker also advised the students about how to prepare and appear before an interview board. The entire presentation kept the audience interested.

Campus Placement

The placement cell of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women organised a campus placement session here yesterday. Mr Sumeet Dixit, Branch Manager (Hiring) and Mr Kaustubh Barooah, Senior Hiring Officer, GENPACT (Gurgaon), chaired the session. They gave a brief introduction about their company. Nearly 300 final year students of PGDCA, BCA, B.Com and BA participated in the interactive session. The company shortlisted 27 students.

The placement coordinator, Prof T.S. Arneja, said the company officials were impressed by the performance of the students during the strenuous selection process. The college Principal, Dr Manju Chawla, congratulated the students.

Meanwhile, eight students of this college have passed the UGC Net examination held in June 2006. Sheenum, Harpreet, Rajwinder, Rubina, Harpreet, Pooja, Amandeep and Jasbir of the 2006 batch have cleared the test.

Saraswati Model Senior Secondary School organised its annual prize distribution function here today.

Mr Tejinder Singh Dhaliwal, SDM, Payal, was the chief guest. He appreciated the efforts of the school management, Principal, staff and students for successfully organising the function. Mr Kuldeep Singh, DSP, Payal, presided over the function.

Mr D.S. Gosain, Principal of the school, read out the annual report highlighting the academic and cultural achievements of the institution in the past session.

Mr M.L. Goel, Director of the school, welcomed the chief guest. Mr Balwant Singh Pangali, general secretary, GNN College, Doraha, Mr Jaswant Singh Gill, Director, GNN College, Dr N.S. Sidhu, Principal, and Prof M.S. Family claims damages for malicious prosecution

Ludhiana, November 29
A family allegedly booked in a rape and attempt to murder case has moved a city court seeking damages on the account of malicious prosecution.

Taking cognisance of the petition filed by Raj Kumari and Sunil Kumar of Partap colony, the court of Civil Judge (Junior Division), Mr Charanjeet Arora, has ordered to issue summons to Vaneeta Sharma of Urban Estate, Ludhiana, and her three family members for March 2, 2007.

It was claimed by the petitioners that Vaneeta Sharma in connivance with her family members allegedly roped their family members in a criminal case under Sections 307, 376, 506 and 149 of the IPC at Division No. 7 police station, on May 16 this year.

However, the local police conducted an enquiry and found Kamla Rani (mother-in-law of the complainant) and her sons, Sunil Kumar and Sandeep Sharma, innocent. The statement to this effect was given by the ASI, Harjinder Pal, in the court of Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Gurbir Singh, where their bail applications were pending.

The police had registered the case following the complaint of Vaneeta Sharma, wherein she had alleged that Kewal Sharma, the elder brother of her husband, threatened her and forcibly established sexual relationship with her. When she disclosed this fact to her in-laws they, including her husband, Sanjeev Sharma, tried to kill her by administering poisonous substance.
