Indian Air Force selection drive  gets overwhelming response

Mohali, December 3
The fast-track selection drive started by Indian Air Force at Chandigarh Engineering College (CEC), Landran, near here, saw overwhelming enthusiasm from students of various engineering colleges of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

The team of assessors from the IAF Selection Board, Dehra Dun, is led by Gp.Capt. Ravi Sharma. The other officers in the team include Wg.Cdr. D. Virmani,Wg.Cdr. K. Yadav, Ms Shilpi, a psychologist and a number of other rank officials.

The three-day selection drive will continue on December 4 and 5 from 8:30-10:30 am. All the engineering degree-holders scoring minimum 60 per cent marks and the present final year students with 55 per cent marks till sixth semester in electronics, telecommunication, electrical, electronics & communication, instrumentation, computer science/engineering or any combination of these subjects are eligible to appear. The aspirants must have been born between 02 July 1979 and 01 July 1989.

Dr G.D. Bansal, Principal CEC and Mr Avinash C. Sharma, Head HRD, informed that a software was especially developed for this drive, by the Computer Science Department of the college. The software enabled an online fast and precise registration with photographs using webcam with no duplicacy of data.

5000 take part in Science Olympiad

Chandigarh, December 3
The Science Olympiad 2006, an event organised by 'The Educationist' , saw huge participation with more than 5000 students appearing for it in Chandigarh and at 14 centres around the country. The test included subjects of physics, chemistry, biology and maths as per the syllabus prescribed by the CBSE and other competitive examinations.

Merit holders of the Olympiad will be given cash prizes, merit certificates and trophies. Other deserving students will be provided with free packages for courses held by the Horizon Institute of Competitions at Chandigarh, Panchkula, Delhi, Jammu and Faridabad. — TNS

A poetic treat

Seventeen acclaimed Punjabi poets, with their choicest literary creations, regaled the audience at a “kavi darbar” organised by the Haryana Punjabi Sahit Akademi in collaboration with the Haryana Punjabi Lekhak Sabha at the Gymkhana Club-II, Sector 3, here, today.

After the traditional “shama roshan” ceremony by the chief guest Shiv Singh a sculptor of international repute, the programme commenced with all poets paying tributes to noted Urdu poet Gurdial Singh Arif, who died yesterday.

A Punjabi book “Nadi Meinu Pee Gayi”, authored by Justice Balwant Rai (retd), was also released by Shiv Singh on the occasion.

Sahitya akademi award winner Gurbax Saini, who conducting the mushaira, set the pace as the poets read out their verses on diverse subjects of social and cultural relevance. The themes varied from female foeticide to human relationships, pride and cultural pollution beamed through TV channels.

52nd National School Games
City boys, girls reign supreme

The local boys and girls stole the show on the third day of the 52nd National School Games 2006-07 being organised by the Education Department here.
Chandigarh boys (u-17) beat AP squad with a huge margin of 16-0.

The main scorers were Ranjodh Singh (1st, 8th and 18th minutes), Deepak Kumar (7th and 52nd minutes), Lovedeep Singh (10th and 30th minutes), Dupinder (20th minute), Harinder Singh (26th, 47th and 50th minutes), Preetinder Singh (27th, 35th and 42nd minutes), Sandeep (37th minute) and Impreet (43rd minute).

Chandigarh girls beat Rajasthan team by 8-0.

Punjab boys’ hockey team also won their league matches, but the match between Punjab and Karnataka ended in a 1-1 draw. In another match Punjab girls beat Andhra girls 2-0.

In soft ball Chandigarh boys beat Gujarat 12-4.

Aditi, Rajiv win TT titles

Aditi Tandon of The Tribune emerged winner in the women’s singles category by beating Jyotika Sood 21-14, 22-20 in the Airtel-Chandigarh Press Club Inter-Media Table Tennis Tournament, held at DAV Public School, Sector 8, here today.

Reigning champion Rajiv Bajaj of The Tribune today again displayed his supremacy as he comfortably beat his opponents to once again clinch the men’s singles trophy.

The pair of G.S. Paul and Jyotika claimed the mixed doubles title. In the semi-finals, the pair defeated Akash Ghai and Aditi 21-18, 21-17.

Later, the team of Paul and Jyotika defeated the pair of Maneesh Chhibber and Chitleen K. Sethi (21-18, 21-15) in the final.

In another notable tie, Vinay Chudhary (Tribune) defeated Umesh (Tribune) 21-18, 14-21, 21-14.

In the final, the forehand smashes of Bajaj resulted in the defeat of Vinay 21-10, 21-11.

Later, Bajaj also partnered Arvind Saini to win the men’s doubles title too. They beat the pair of Raghav and Umesh 21-9, 21-17 in the semi-finals and later got the better of the team of Rohit and Vinay (Tribune) 21-13, 21-16 in straight sets to lift the trophy.

Nawabs in driver's seat

A superb knock of 76 runs by Abhinav Kumar put Hyderabad in driver's seat as the team got 84-run lead over Baroda in the quarterfinal match of the All-India Inter-Zonal Knockout (U-22) Cricket Tournament being played at the J.R Institute of Cricket Technology, Barwala, here today.

Resuming from 57 for 2, the Hyderabadi batsmen put on 276 for 5 in their first innings at the end of the second day play. Playing well Abhinav and Rushi Raj faced the Baroda's bowling attack with aplomb and at lunch the scoreboard read 181 for 3.

The final day's play will start at 9 am tomorrow.
