‘Knowledge of maths must for software programming’

The Department of Computer Science and Applications of the DD Jain College for Women organised a seminar on ‘importance of math and statistics in software development’ here yesterday.

Prof S.L. Aggarwal, Chief Administrator Officer of Takshashila of Trident Industries, conducted the seminar.

AIDS awareness rally

NSS volunteers of SCD Government College held an AIDS awareness rally on the college campus under the guidance of the Principal, Dr Malkiat Singh, and the programme officers, Prof Harbilas Heera and Prof P.S. Grewal, here yesterday. The volunteers spread the message about precautions to save oneself from AIDS. All students displayed placards and banners with various slogans on AIDS. The Principal addressed the students. The Vice-Principal, Prof M.S. Grewal, Prof Ashwani Bhalla, Prof K.G. Soni, Mr Sodhi Ram Kainth, and Mr Naresh Bhardwaj also participated in the rally.

Commerce students shine

All students of Aurobindo College enrolled in honours courses of marketing and finance passed with high first division in the results declared by Panjab University, Chandigarh, recently. Ashwinder Singh of B.Com II topped with 73 per cent marks in marketing honours and Simrat Sethi top scored in finance with 77 per cent marks.

Quiz contest

The Department of History organised a quiz contest on the martyrdom of Sikh Guru Teg Bahadur here on the college premises on Thursday. The Principal, Ms Veena Mann, was the chief guest. The objective of the contest was to apprise the students of the sacrifices and contributions of the Sikh Gurus.

Nidhi of BA I spoke about the life of Guru Teg Bahadur. A shabad gayan was also presented by Harvinder of Class XII and generated a serene ambience in the seminar hall. Teams C, D and B bagged the first, second and third positions, respectively. Ms Maan appreciated the efforts of the faculty and the students for organising the quiz.

Rotary gives woollens

The Rotary Club of Ludhiana North distributed woollen sweaters and fruits to the students of National Children Labour Project School, EWS Colony, here recently.

Mr Kuldeep Singh, Superintendent, Central Jail, and Mr Tulsi Das Jaitwani advised the students to work hard and become good citizens of the country. The school is being run by the International Labour Organisation and is housed in the Balmiki Dharamshala.

Declamation contest

An inter-house English declamation contest for the students of the primary section was organised by the Junior Humanities Forum at Kundan Vidya Mandir here on Saturday.

The school Principal, Mr S.C. Saxena, presided over the function. He was accompanied by the heads of various sections. Mrinal Jindal of Raman House won the first prize. He was also adjudged the best speaker of the primary section. Aashna Gaur of Patel House bagged the second prize and the third prize was won by Sarthak Jain of Subhash House. Avi Arora of Patel House got an appreciation prize. The Principal gave away the prizes to the winners.

Meanwhile, a day out was arranged for the little blossoms of the K.G. section of Kundan Vidya Mandir to Rose Garden to make them enjoy and feel the natural environment.

Lecture on adult education

The Malwa Central College of Education organised an extension lecture on ‘adult education: philosophical and sociological perspective’ here on Saturday. Dr Kuldip Puri, a former Director of the Regional Resource Centre, Department of Adult and Continuing Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the resource person. He deliberated upon various philosophical and sociological issues related to the adult literacy movement.

Senior citizens entertained

The youth club of Government Senior Secondary School (Multi-purpose), Cinema Road, presented a cultural programme at the Senior Citizen home, Sarabha Nagar, here on Saturday. Navdeep Romana, coordinator of the club, gave a brief report of the club. The Principal, Mr H.K. Mayer, presided over the function. The members of the club entertained the senior citizens by presenting cultural items.

Ms Asha Kapila, Ms Neena Jindal, Ms Khushwant Kaur, Ms Sudeep Kaur and Ms Jagdeep Kaur exchanged views with senior citizens. Mr Jagdeep Singh advised young students to give respect to the aged. Among the senior citizens, a yoga expert advised the students how to live a healthy life.

Students take part in contests

The teachers of BCM College of Education, Chandigarh Road, organised co-curricular activities at BCM School, Basant Avenue, Dugri, on Saturday. The competitions of singing, elocution and mono-acting were held. Charu conducted the stage. The function started with Gayatri mantra followed by thought on ‘six keys to success’ by Neha. Ankur, Imtoz, Preet, Ridhhna, Likhita, Anmol, Sakshi, Anand, Amanjot were declared winners in these competitions.

Plea to students

Mr Joginder Singh, Principal, Government Senior Secondary School, Sandaur, yesterday called upon students to inculcate elements of religious books in their lifestyle and vow to live a pious life.

Addressing a function organized at the school, Mr Joginder Singh claimed that recognising norms and values of religion was the only way to save society from falling prey to the dreaded diseases. "As all religions teach to live a pious life based on ethics, there was no chance that an individual would fall prey to pathogens carried through immoral activities," argued Mr Singh, adding that a large number of youth were contracting virus of dreaded diseases through infected syringes and equipment used for administration of drugs.

Mr Daljit Singh, nodal teacher, and Munish Malhotra also spoke on the occasion.

41 Ganga Giri College students win prizes at fest

Raikot, December 3
The management committee of the local Swami Ganga Giri Janta College for Women felicitated students who had brought laurels to the institute at the inter-zonal youth festival of Punjab University that concluded in Chandigarh recently.

The felicitation function was marked by performances of Pt Rajan Mishra and Pt Sajan Mishra of Varanasi Gharana.

According to Mr Tarun Ghaie, in charge of the event, Manpreet Kaur, was presented a special prize for being the best debater of the university.

The college bagged eight prizes at the festival. Those who took part in the embroidery, giddha, shabad and group song competitions also brought laurels to the institute.

Mr Ramesh Kaura, secretary, and Dr Savita Uppal appreciated the role of teachers in promoting talent among students. As many as 41 prizes were bagged by the students of the college at the zonal festival.

Ms Harjit Kaur, senior vice-president, Dr Rajinder Kaura, joint secretary, were among those present on the occasion.

World Disabled Day at KVM

Ludhiana, December 3
To spread awareness among students regarding the disabled and in order to develop a sympathetic attitude towards them, Kundan Vidya Mandir observed World Disabled Day here today.

The theme this year was e-accessibility. A talk was given in the higher section during assembly. The middle section had a formal assembly where Principal S.C. Saxena exhorted students to be kind to the disabled. He said the disabled did not need pity. They needed support and care. Students were encouraged to visit places where special children were taught to cope with their disability.

In the KG section, the teachers enacted a play. In the primary section, the students expressed their views along with suggestions to encourage and help the underprivileged.

Later, a painting competition was organised. About 36 students took part.
