UP Governor calls on Patil
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 3
Uttar Pradesh Governor T.V. Rajeshwar today met Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and is understood to have apprised him about the law and order situation in the state.

The meeting took place in the backdrop of violence in Kanpur following the alleged desecration of B.R. Ambedkar’s statue there.

The meeting assumes significance as for quite some time now there has been demand from various political parties for the imposition of President’s rule in the state and Union Home Minister of State Sriprakash Jaiswal, who belongs to Kanpur, had last month said the Centre was contemplating on imposing Central rule in the state.

The BJP, Congress and the BSP have been saying that free and fair elections were not possible under the Samajwadi Party government, headed by Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. They cited large-scale violence and irregularities in the recent local body elections in the state as also the deteriorating law and order situation there.
